Would like to hear peoples experiences of running these with over 100k miles on the clock. What are your opinions of them, whats the reliability like at that age/miles and what are they like as an overall farm truck. Feel a Touareg would be too fancy for a farm truck but seem to be able to get a younger/lower mileage one for the equally priced disco. Will be using it as a general farm run around, towing up to 3.5t but also for long motorway journeys to visit family 4 1/2 hours away at least once a month so comfort/economy is also important. Cheers, G

What about a Mercedes ML. We use one as a farm truck. Paid £2k for it. Far nicer than a pickup to use. And not too shabby off road. You’d get one of them lots cheaper than a Disco. And I’m sure it’d be better build quality.

Had a 58 plate one. The thing just cost a fortune to run once it hit 70k. Loads of issues mechanically.

Mine is the previous generation. The squarer looking one. Would they be different or not by much? I took the view it’s 2k it’s done two years for me already with basic servicing and MOT if I scrap it in the next 12 months it won’t have hurt me. Depends what the OP budget is really.

ive had a d4 at 152k and a d3 at 150k i took the d3 from 110k to 150k did box oils diff oils etc as part of regular serving an some bushes. only thing i did was a few brake pipes and a propshaft.

was a great car took it all over Europe numerous time was just getting long in the tooth and 4d much better on fuel.

D4 similar but did less with it around 145k to 152k, was in good shape just did std servicing but did not require any other work considering miles.

i ended up with a much lower miles newer d4, as in other threads get latest you can as common faults are resolved ive got a 16 d4 landmark, amusingly ive ha to do prop as centre bearing rubber had failed, weird could just be loads of towing (prop repair place said this can happen) but there easy to fit and not particularly expensive.

You need to go drive them, and compare im a big fan of d4 comfort, power, usability (ive got 4 kids) tows amazing even with ifor full of lambs, plus generally quite easy to work on.

cant comment on toureg as never driven or repaired one.

I love my discovery 4. It's only the second car behind a Range Rover Vogue I find comfortable and everyone who goes in it comments on how comfy it is. It tows a 14 foot stock box easily and is pretty economical unless you're heavy footed. It has around 115K miles on and we have spent a few K on repairs but that's to be expected, has been a great truck.

Budget is £10-15k. Aiming for something that will last at least 10 years

ok thanks. What are the common faults to look out for on earlier d4s? do you think a d3 with 100k + miles would be more reliable than a d4 with similar miles?

anoying sh!t, pre 2014 they crack inlet manifolds at around 110k (thing easy there easy to replace with cambelts which are also due that this mileage) to be fair i cant think of much else off top of my head,

i would generally always go high miles newer car within reason,

thats over budget, but is top spec and fairly reasonable miles its just an example

you should easy get a 2013 (cheaper tax and 8 speed box but double check tax) for your 15k budget especially if you go low spec you could get a super low mileage one

be patient at xmas they will be giving them away!
