Discussion on van definitions and speed limits

Hi, can anyone find the thread that this was discussed on?
I have a little project on. Convert Disco 2 car to van.
The rear seats are coming out anyway. but it's a question of how far down the process of changing the V5 that I go.
No point in saving money on tax, insurance and spare parts and getting done for speeding every trip down the A1.
Thanks

We have to "weld" a plate in the back foot well and the seat belt mounts also welded up for it to pass for the cheap commercial tax. I seem to remember a short list of stuff to do .............

A 3L private vehicle = £1000 - £1500 if not more
Converted = roughly £300 road tax

I was always told that if its what's termed as a "car derived van" then the same speed limits apply as a car.

There was a letter in the Honest John column in the Daily/Saturday Telegraph a few years ago where some was being prosecuted for speeding in a van not realising that there are lower speed limits for vans. Honest John then said pretty much the above and gave a link to a govt webpage.

Sorry, I don't know or have it!

Don’t think a Disco would ever qualify as a CDV, purely on weight alone...

Car derived van is a load of balls anyway as they now sell van derived cars..... Berlingo multispce is a car, the Berlingo is a van you buy the exact same spec vehicle ( rear seats and side windows) through the retail or commercial arm..... one is a van the other car....

Car derived van was meant to be for Astra vans which had the braking and suspension of a car

It would make sense to make it weight based system ie under 2500kg gross but there are so many stupidly heavy cars now

For really comedy classifications the old Severn bridge tolls were bonkers

I got caught speeding in my discovery commercial, the offence was treated as if the vehicle was a car and not a van in regards to speed limit and it was on a dual carriageway, log book says commercial vehicle so they would of known I’d have thought

I got caught in my shogun commercial with rear seats, I was doing 79 in a 70. Went to court for various reason and only got a fine! They didn’t once mention it should have only been doing 60mph. So guess it’s down to the local police/ judge’s knowledge

D2 is old enough that road tax is £300ish already so not much saving there.
Donor (white) D2 has the bracket for load floor to replace rear seats.

It also has the blackout windows needed for conversion and the rear storage bins to replace seats 6 and 7. :)

Financial saving would be running it through the books rather than as private car. I hate keeping mileage records.

My old 5 door Vitara lost the back seats/seat belts etc and I built a frame to cover the space at the level of the rear wheel inner arches, then boarded it out leaving a void beneath that held trays/drawers for detecting/camping gear. Passed two MOT`s like that. :)

I think the 60 limit on a dual carriageway is mostly ignored, we have a dual carriageway over here & there is a couple of stretches where the limit is reduced to 60, then at the end of them back to national.
Had a "chat" with a police man one day & when I mentioned the limit being 60 why would it need to be reduced? he more or less said it's treated the same as a motorway without saying anything to commit himself.
