Diverting rainwater in summer

IMG_20180408_114644455.jpg

As above picture, in winter the yard serves as a feed area the dairy cows, so all slurry/dirty/rain water goes to the slurry pit just to the right of where i am standing taking the picture. As soon as the cows are out, no livestock goes anywhere near this yard, but the rain that falls on it over the summer period ends up in the slurry pit, which needs emptying before the cows come in.
There is a drain that goes from the gutter on the corner of the shed on the right to a main drain on the left of the picture.
If I could put a gully in the center of the yard and join it to the gutter drain, it would intercept the clean rainwater flowing down the yard in summer and send it down the drain to the ditch instead of filling the slurry pit.
Does anyone know of an acceptable way (to the relevant agencies) of blocking this gully in winter, so all the slurry dirty water goes to the pit, but in summer can be opened to allow the clean rain water to flow to the ditch.
Thanks H H

Nor sure any yard water is classed as clean.
@holwellcourtfarm might know.
Interesting one. (y)

If it were an arable yard the yard water would drain to a surface water system and nobody would argue (they might be pedantic and want oil interceptors but that's about it).

As long as the concrete is really clean before you divert it each summer I can see no reason why not. You would just need to be able to PROVE to NRW that you had a robust system in place to avoid the winter slurry washings being diverted the wrong way.

I suggest you talk to them. What have you to lose?

You can get a 4” shut of valve for underground pipe, costs about £60, in summer have it open so water runs into drains in winter close it so it floods into lagoon. However, not sure how environmental agency will look at it if water running off yard that cows winter on

They dont seem to have many reservations about run off from roads that are contaminated with oils etc,cant see a problem with your valve idea

They would need persuading that you wouldn't just open the valve in winter once the slurry pit is full. If you can demonstrate why that wouldn't happen you'd probably be ok.
Why would you tell them ? I have two sewage pumping stations bordering me both, like all pumping stations have overflows straight into the river/ditch.

Intesting to find out that you can get a proper shut off valve for soil pipe, an idea i had was to have a couple of drain test plugs down the pipe to stop any dirty water flowing down the drain, and a steel plate with mastic instead of the grid to seal the gulley.
