DIY 4G Internet Install

Imho, although your phone will not give a true strength of signal, use your phone to indicate if you have a 4g signal - outside your house, not inside as I'm not a fan on skimping on an antenna.

External antenna will give better reception compared to internal signal strength, especially if you have thick walls.

Make sure the phone is actually showing 4g, not 3g, then use the map to get direction of the appropriate mast.

Then you buy a directional map vs omni directional, as you get better reception in my experience, and you can then chose an appropriate place for the mounting of the antenna and pole.

Remember though - 5 mtr distance is deemed the max distance you want from the router to antenna, and the supplied cables are normally that length.

so, today i did a speed test on the satellite system - seems poor but the numbers i got were 8.86 down, 4.24 up.
I then did same on my phone, and got 4.69 down and 5.54 up.
Would anyone like to hazard a guess how much improvement i woulg egt over the phone value if i installed a 4G system and an external antenna?

The OP recmonded a 4G modem, though thats a while ago now - any recomednatins on components these days?
thanks

I think you are going to get similar or slightly better. There's more chance by checking out all the available networks.
I have a "good" 4G router and a "good" external aerial and can't say I am over impressed at all.

All a matter of how far you are from the mast & lack of obstructions between you & the mast.
our experience -
When we 1st went to mobile broadband the signal was 2 bars 3G from a mast 5 miles away.
speed was double figures usually about 15 mbs
Then the local mast was upgraded to 4G 1 mile away, clear sight line 4 bars speed 60 - 70 mbs.

Loads of router options on the market. We had a Huewei which worked fine.
You want 4G sometimes called LTE, unlocked, so you can put in any network sim & with external antenna sockets incase you need extra help from an external antenna. Some just have one RJ45 socket for network cable, others 4 sockets All depends what you need
Should get something for £70 - £100

Edit
Should add, speed readings are generaly better on the PC / laptop wired direct to the router than devices connected by Wifi

I cannot recommend the gear we opted for enough with how well we are seeing it perform for us.

Just ran a speed test on my mobile which is connected to the router via wifi and came back with this:

We are not direct line of sight to the mast, more pointing in approximate direction of the mast over the valley / trees etc using the mast locater maps linked to earlier, so in the general direction of the mast with a directional antenna.
