DIY electrical discharge machining

Certainly interesting. I bet there will be at least one person here who will be able to dream up a practical use for such a machine within their own sphere of operations, or hobby.

How did you come to find out about EDM?

I've bid on a few of them in auctions but no joy yet, my tongue isn't out for one but I often lament over a portable one I missed out on a few years back.
I've seen milkloss's video before, it's interesting.

It's one of those machines you wouldn't use too often but when you would it I'd be worth it's weight in gold.
Very awkward stud removal would be my main use for a portable one or die making for a static one but like I said, I'm in no rush for one at all, it's nearly becoming old tech now what with cnc and metal printing becoming more mainstream for the big players.

I heard of machines that would do this years ago. It was called spark erosion.
Wire burning, spark eroding, die sinking, EDM or wire erosion all different names for the same unit.
Only difference was as they progressed they got more refined, faster pulses, more precise and such.
Worked for a crowd once where they used sdm for making intricate designs on moulds that at the time wouldn't of been possible any other way, cnc could do it today tho, time and processes move on but that's not to say edm still has a place today.
The correct machine is excellent at removing a tap or a broken drill from a portable work piece.

their out there, some fairly affordable now a days but static machines, the portable one was the dogs dangles as you could bring it to the work piece rather than the other way round iykwim.

side stepping the edm for a min, have a look at what John saunders toured lately, how tech has progressed is an understatement in this video, its a long one but an addictive watch all the same.

its interesting isnt it,
the friction welding impressive of the steel, basically brute force but by god it cant half weld metal, thickness not being much of a problem, stirring the metal basically.

And parts that can talk back, give a heads up before it breaks and when there is too much stress.
the welding of the foil is mad.... on a home made machine you could say.
space is bringing it on.
that first young lad is a smart cookie....
