DIY, OOPF, RFID

I've been looking into this a lot myself lately, being an Electronic Engineering student.
I got a kit from Velleman that can read an RFID card or the microchip in some cats.
The problem is, most RFID systems run at 125kHz whereas sheep tags work at 132.5kHz.
Some people say it's just as simple as changing the oscillation frequency either by changing the Quartz crystal or by altering the programming. Others say it's not as simple as that.
I'm saving up to buy a proper textbook on the subject with a view to building one from the ground up.

Lots of people doing cheap RFID kits for Arduino, eg for £3.49 there is this:

This is also worth a read:

I'm assuming that OP, like myself, wants to read EID tags in sheep.
The system in that link reads at 18.56MHz so it is not compatible with EID tags
If however, the OP wants to build some other system, like a calf feeder that uses RFID collars, the system you suggest would work as he would be free to put whatever frequency of tag in the collar as he saw fit.

My cows don't have any radio tags at the moment. I have a dairy plan, GEA parlor but no identification.

I have out of parlour feeders connected to my dairyplan computer, they use nedap readers/receivers my transponders are 120khz PM type.

I have a 100 or so 120khz Am type, they work with my readers but not at the same time as the PM type :banghead:

Ideally I want to change my readers so they read hdx type tags then I wouldn't need to bother with collars.
