Do these stalks need cutting?

I am about to over-seed a small field, I have grazed off, yet there are old grass stems still sticking up, do they need mowing off before I over-seed?

Depends on the machine in question- if it will cope with them. I wouldn't go topping or mowing them unless the seeding device can't cope. They will do no harm stood up there.
Heres the machine doing the over-seeding by Aled Jones, Specialist Arable & Grassland contractor from Carmarthenshire.

The stalks will be fine, it is the green grass that needs to be hammered to nothing by the sheep if possible as it will compete like anything with the emerging new grass.
