Do tractors go better after 8pm?

Back in my teens I did a lot of hitch hiking. One old boy picked me up and claimed to be an inventor. He said that "water gas" added to fuel made it more efficient. He claimed that motors ran better in the evening because of the moisture in the air. He had invented a gadget to introduced water vapour into the fuel in a carburetor. I haven't a clue whether that is correct or not but I've remembered that old boy for nearly 50 years! Who knows? He reckoned nobody would take up his invention because they'd sell less fuel!

I think you/he was right.
We used to inject water or steam into the combustion zone of gas turbines to increase power output and efficiency. The steam expanded further and added momentum over and above air. I think the draw back that prevented its widespread adoption was that the water or steam had to be very pure otherwise it put deposits on the turbine blades which reduced efficiency.
Generally speaking the cooler the air going into an engine, the more efficiently it will perform, hence the use of intercoolers.

Few years back, one of my brothers owned a Subaru WRX STI. Proper quick that was, it had a system for injecting water into the fuel/air mixture.

Well known fact, petrol cars with a carb have less power at high altitude due to air being thinner.

Ford worked towing limits out by using a gradient (not sure what it was) at sea level for this reason.

Yes probably right some old engines put water in combustion process some how . And some tractor pullers inject water in to the engine for better combustion or to stop them melting or something

I've often thought that ours go better when cooler in the evenings, always thought my mind was playing tricks but have thought it on more than several occasions. Never actually tested the theory, though.

Would water gas be hydrogen? Garage near us used to do an add on to improve fuel usage. Was a system making hydrogen from water and adding the gas into the inlet manifold
