Do we live in a civilised world ?

the thing is... America has the wherewithal to stop Russia's economy and potentially crush its economy overnight. But nobody is willing to take the hit of not buying in Russian oil/gas. Nobody wants to hurt their nations slightly to help and it's very sad. We will see how this one plays out tho

The usa doesnt need russian gas or oil

Putins forces deliberately targeting civilians over night .
Are we really going to stand back and watch?
If women and children were being attacked near by and you had the strength to stop it , surely you would?
In a civilised world we would not just sit and watch.
Putin would wet his pants if a western country got involved & we know he fears NATO.
Did we do anything when Lenin or Stalin did the same???
Send in The Light Brigade!!!

The countries of eastern and central europe need the Russian oil

USA has enough of their own many counties In the USA have an oil or gas well
we the uk imports a lot of gas from the USA into Grangemouth and Pembroke

I suspect if Ukraine can last then russian use of swift will be stopped very soon

Chinese won't get involved. Their primary concern will be the big impact it has had on their business interests- all negative. They consume a lot of oil and LNG the price of which has gone mental. International travel will also be affected to some degree.

Regardless of the outcome of the Ukrainian situation, you now have a shed load of high tech military equipment that could fall into the wrong hands. Eastern Europe per se is known to have a vein of corruption in it and has been a hot bed of terrorism at times. It is a crossroads for the Middle East and Asia and Russia or other outlying states.

Whatever happens, you can be sure it will cost everyone a lot of money. If the Ukrainians win then the USA will have won an epic military intelligence campaign.

Nuclear weapons are so dangerous they can't ever be used. Vlad might be an abhorrent man for starting this but I can't see he has a wish to see Russia totally turned to ash which is what would happen if the UK, France and USA ever fired any at him.

Long term Germany and the UK need to gain a lot more energy independence and do it fast.

I was having a think about this. When it’s all over and as is likely Russia wins. What are they going to do they can’t put everyone in jail and there’s going to be a lot of angry people with guns around. I think he’s going to be looking at a poisoned chalice as they say. Keeping control is going to be hard I hope.
The West have effectively sacrificed Ukraine, at least they now know what he's capable of & must never ever let it happen again, to date the reinforcement of Nato frontiers is looking a little half assed & weak!

We’ve had 75 years of relative peace in Europe thanks to NATO and like it or not to some extent the EU. Up until about 8 years ago Ukraine was really a Russian satellite state. Most people myself included could never have envisaged what Putin is doing and in hindsight European Governments should have acted quicker and more forcefully. But we’ve really been living in a golden age where worrying about a mad foreign dictator probably was a long way down the list of Governments things to do list.
I should add if the West had taken measures to protect Ukraine such as putting troops or equipment in before Putin had tried anything it surely would have been taken as an act of war and that wasn’t ever going to happen.

The answer to the OP is “no we don’t and haven’t for many years” I’m afraid. Conflicts around the world can all be questioned for validity that’s the world we live in. If this shocks folk, wake up! If the veiled threat to Norway and Sweden not to join NATO by one of Putins crew is true, then this indicates the mood from the Kremlin I’d suggest and this is as big a risk as that which is unfolding in Ukraine now. Putin has “snapped” and now will be difficult for him to back down. As others have said the world order should never have let Putin to become so “strong” We either sit back and watch him take Ukraine back and then other previous Russian states or we do take action. Would he use nuclear? If he did the response would potentially turn Moscow to dust etc etc but the risk is we all wipe each other out. Deep down I can’t believe any human being would be so stupid as to start such a conflict but we don’t know!

If he gets cornered he might well push the button, we all need to hope that the more sane members of his inner circle would take him out, most will have kids and grandkids and would not want them killed

In the minds of the Russians, they are only taking back that which should be under their control anyway.

Why aren't Wales, Scotland and the island of Ireland totally independent? Because we, the English regard them as "ours"

Russia tries to regain control over a neighbouring state-we went to war over some poor sheep grazing on the other side of the World!

US military intelligence will have spotted Russian vehicles and troops moving well before any of this was in the news or announced.

It is interesting that all the Russian tanks are only using metalled roads. I presume off road it is too wet.
Russian Army isn't as mechizaned as thought? Or did they assume they could quickly over awe the Ukrainians or that a significant proportion of the Ukrainians would welcome them as "liberators"?

A man has pleaded guilty at Newtownards Magistrates’ Court to waste offences relating to a bonfire next to the electrical sub-station on the Circular Road in Newtownards, Co. Down.

Gareth Gill (51) of Abbot’s Walk, Newtownards pleaded guilty to two charges under the Waste and Contaminated Land (Northern Ireland) Order 1997, for which he was fined £150 each and ordered to pay a £15 offender’s levy

On June 25, 2018, PSNI officers went to Gill’s yard, where they found a large amount of waste consisting of scrap wood, pallets, carpet and underlay.

Discussion with Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) officers confirmed the site...
