We need to move from a situation were the Authorities have to prove a person should not own gun to one where a person has to prove they should have a gun-that means a definite need to own rather than just a wish to own, a proper mental health assessment by a qualified person and regular reviews of the person's right to keep a gun.

All costs of the above should be paid by the applicant. After all, the individual has to pay to get a driving licence for a car or an hgv and neither are designed to be lethal.

Unfortunately all to often there is a knee jerk reaction by politicians when tragedies like this happen, there is no way any amount of new gun laws will ever stop someone who goes over the edge as has been said & as we saw in London this guy could just as easily have killed with knives, a car or any amount of other means, politicians would do far better to concentrate any new legislation on the dark side of the internet & hold those people responsible!

Ah yes. So that knee jerk reaction to ban handguns after Dunblane didn't help?

The point is where do you stop, after Dunblane our pistol shooters have to go abroad to train for Olympic competitions, is the EU countries any less safe than ours, villains & terrorists will always have access to handguns, do you ban knives after London or cars when an idiot drives into people deliberately.

From what I have seen on the local news the evidence was there that this guy was not too mentally stable, posts on Youtube etc. No amount of tightening gun laws will stop these horrific incidents if the authorities ignore such things.
As to pump action shotgun, I thought after one of the past incidents that any semi automatic shotgun ( including pump action) could legally only hold three rounds. Perhaps, even if he was a firearms holder, he held this gun illegally and it could hold more than three rounds.

How many people would it take to monitor the internet output of every firearms holder in the Country?

The laws are fine it's the implementation that can sometimes fail.
AFAIK we dont know why this happened but if he didn't have a gun he could very easily used a knife.

As has been seen in recent terrorist attacks, a man with a knife can be tackled and disarmed. Who's going to take on a man with a shotgun?

There's also the "disconnected" factor to consider. A mentally disturbed person can shoot and kill from a few feet away whereas they may not have it within themselves to kill at very close quarters

While I dont dismiss your point IIRC the terrorist was disarmed in a public place by the police/ public very different to someone kicking the door in and catching people unaware.
As I said the laws are ok in my view they need applying.
I no longer have a licence as no interest in having a gun these days,as have family to do the pest control, do a bit of target practice at a range once in a blue moon so no axe to grind

EU criminals have Assault Rifles and Machine guns. If criminals can land 1,000s of criminals on boats they can land a howitzer never mind a pistol.
