In America with their big gardens it's common for homeowners to have mower/loader garden tractors. They look great fun

Nope. Not even when we were farming more land. Never owned a quad bike, but no livestock so....
I've always viewed these things as toys ( tin hat time ). Did have a £400 Disco when we did free range eggs. Often wondered till about the mid 80's hardly any farms had a quad, nor an excavator, nor dump trailer........
Good point. We didn’t even have a road going sheep trailer or any pick up truck at all until the late 1990’s (and I dare say we didn’t really need it thence). And we had cattle and sheep. My father ran a Ford Escort car. No quad bike, just the 135 as the small working tractor. Everything was moved by hauliers for little cost. I like toys but really you need surprisingly little machinery to run a farm. We had no topper either. Grass was either eaten or mown for hay, including the main road verges. Diesel was cheaper but it would have been considered sacrilege to flail the verge and leave to rot. Even the churchyard was hand scythed by a smallholder and fed to his two milking cows. Now if it can’t be done sat on your arse with earphones in, then it isn’t done at all. Probably as much diesel burnt in the parish now flailing .”environmental strips” and amenity as would have once kept a small dairy herd going.

I have a couple of little Internationals . The little 250 is handy as I can carry it about inside the livestock trailer and don't have to leave it over at the stables when no one is there (we are getting a couple of visits a week following the Wickham Horse Fair. ) At home I have a 434 with indestructible cab which is very handy for haymaking , cutting firewood, picking up calves, etc. I had a couple of clapped out ones in the hedge and used all the best bits to make into one, so it has a cab and 2 speed PTO, which along with the extra poke, dual clutch and heavier nose make it much more useable than the 250 although Mrs Fred doesn't like it as it isn't "smiley."

I have a holder C500 for work in polytunnel as its so compact. 3 point and pto front and back with trailer deck that takes standard IBC container. Total workhorse even use it for mowing with Claas front mounted mower. My mobility scooter is a Holder A15 4wd used with flail for woodland path maintenance, with box for tools, mountainpress round baler for very steep slopes and saw bench.

The C500, really does sound the biz. I had a mate with a "big" Holder some years ago and hje rated it highly, very versatile.

+1 on the B250 (37hp) with the transport box on the back for fencing and firewood etc. If its raining the 444 (43hp) is called out as it has a cab.

I've a little John Deere 1140, called Bambi. It's the most awkward thing to get in and out, but so useful to move haylage bales, roll, trailer work and pasture topping. A Ford 1120 on grass tires with 4wd is as useful as a quad but a lot slower.

Planning on getting a Kioti CK4010 with loader as a run about and day to day yard tractor.

Some nice gear available for these compact tractors but nothing compared to the USA where these things just have cult following and suppliers/manufacturers have jumped into that market.

1965 Mf135 is my "compact" tractor for general use; the "farm runabout" is a Benford 1.25t dumper - it lives in an open front shed & has never had the 2 pints of diesel taken, let alone been at risk of disappearing. Starts first swing whatever the weather & will pull a trailer with an IBC of water, on the downside she's not exactly the most comfortable ride!

We have a small Someca 550 (Fiat) for knocking about on. We got rid of the quad as it was a bit risky in amongst the cows, a tractor give you more protection. It also it acts as the calf taxi when we are moving fields, as the younger cows sometimes get a bit overexcited and forget to gather up their babies.

Just bought a 25hp sub-compact from these folks, beat the (slightly) more local dealer by a Grand, which on £10K is worth having. (y)

You will not be disappointed with yhour Kioti. HST??
