Can you take a closer up photo or two, I need to be able to identify the weeds and the growth stage of the grass more clearly.

I would say you have a bit of time yet but it will want spraying. Have you had rain on this since it emerged?

2.5L Polo and 0.5L hurler would probably work just fine but I can't see all the weeds,

Chain harrow some more seed on . As soon as the weed gets up top it . Dont spray it or you wont be able to sow any seed
If it's to tender to take a chain harrow leave it a week or so to harden up
Or just direct drill some seed in 6 weeks time
But I cant emphasise more strongly that the no 1 benefit to any new grass ley is to top or graze as soon as it will take weight

I hadn't realised sowing more seed will be necessary. Definitely not fit to harrow. Hopefully not necessary? Got a good morning of rain which makes it look better already. Definite weed issue though. It was sown on the 26th of May

How in the fudge is he going to top that? It's barely 3 inches tall in places?

He has buttercup, seedling docks, chickweed and all sorts coming in that. A topper won't touch those.

Is there any clover in the sown mixture? I looked hard cut can't see any.

I'd leave it another week and spray it with 2-2.5 litres of Polo and 0.5 litres of hurler or similar.

There is going to be a bit of weed grass in it but there is nothing you can do about that. Was it ploughed?

No I grew forage brassicas in it last 2 years. Was grass all my life. Sprayed it off in 2018 and direct drilled them in. Worked very well. There was still a lot of turf so I did the same last year. This year sprayed it off and gave it a good discing and then it was sown with an opico and then flat rolled
Edit: It's quite a low wet field and my father says he ploughed it once and it took years to get firm and advised me never to plough it

He dont need to top yet the weeds ain't competing . Like the man said your obsession is sprays . Not being rude if I ask how many years hands on farming experience have you had . Most people with any experience will tell you that you can get rid of 95% of annual weeds by grazing or topping and it does the grass the world of good . Any spray will check the grass [emoji3]

I've sold and walked plenty of grass in my time mate and for a lot of big and professional farms as well.

'The weeds aren't competing', are you taking the pish? What, so you want to let them get even better established, do you?

The starting point for spraying on new leys is 2 true leaves of the grass. Not 5 tillers and a few seed heads as well. The weeds are going to grow on and you will end up with docks and all sorts there. Leave them to shade the grass and you will have bare patches even if you do manage to control them.

But hey, fudge it, can always spray it all with something twice as dear next year.

A bit of Polo and hurler ain't gonna check the grass for toffee.

You said: top it in a week or so. What, and topping it ain't gonna check the grass either? Why say top it in a week if they aren't competing yet? I'm confused.
