Dodgy Diesel

Anyone else had trouble with red diesel. Reported on Farmers Weekly the other day

We've had low pressure fuel filter error codes come up a couple of times on a Massey.
Friend phoned up tonight he's got fuel problems on a John deere, and was told there's a shortage of fuel filters because of widespread fuel problems!

Talking to someone the other day that had put several new filters on each of his machines this summer - he reckoned that the only problems were where they had pumped fuel stations on farm rather than the old gravity ones.

Strange that there would be problems from fuel stations than gravity fed, I thought all the fuel stations had filters which would be rare on gravity fed, logic would say you’d have less problems with filtered fuel.

We have had problems with fuel this summer.
After a delivery filters suddenly blocked on the bulk tank.
Put new filters in and they blocked after 500 lts.
Supplier didn't want to know.
NFU are wanting members to phone in with their experiences with fuel this summer.
Engineer that came out to combine said he had been changing filters every day on some combines.

Another theory is that the amount of bio diesel has been increased. Would the recent hot weather then affect it, making the bugs grow more rapidly?
Friend been advised to put an addative in his next delivery

I really don't think that would be the issue. Unless it was transported in those dirty sea tankers. UK refineries and most worldwide that sell to the European market have very high standards. The importing transport may not be held to the same standards.
In West Wales there is one fairly local oil distributor's depot that had notoriously leaky tanks. Leaking water inwards that is. They were taken over by a national distributor recently and the depot has now been closed down as far as storage and filling local delivery tankers is concerned. Over the last decade or so the number of farm engines and central heating systems contaminated by them has been very high, although if anyone actually mentioned it publicly they were threatened with legal action.

So there are many potential reasons that fuel might be contaminated. The trick is to prove it and pin it on the distributor responsible. To the customer it may well obvious which batch was dodgy and who delivered it, but what can they do about it?

Touch wood the green stuff (agri diesel here) has been quiet good here for a few years now. It was dreadful stuff about 10 years ago. One delivery was so bad the main winter feeding tractor had to get a filter every 20 hours. I've a water captor filter and 10 micron filter on the diesel pump and it was the best money I spent. I also moved the tank indoors which I think is a help as it's out of the weather.

Changed filters 3 times on one of our combines then the fuel pump spat the dummy! Generator running grain dryer and heat pumps was going through a filter a week and 6195r has had a filter change due to low fuel pressure warning!

Wow, I thought we in Australia had the worst quality diesel but sounds like ours is really good after this, it’s been many years since I’ve had to change filters because of contaminated fuel, has anyone thought to take samples of this fuel after having to change filters? Obviously if having to change filters after only 20h then you know there’s a problem and if it’s that bad should be really easy to prove what the problem is, bad fuel in modern diesel engines can cost you a fortune!

Had error codes come up my my claas 650 so called up dealer and after " diagnosis " and a new set of filters all ok. Under maxi cars so thought all covered. Week later it happens again and dealer says they have to come out again. Phoned buying group and yes they are aware of an issue with dodgy fuel and investigations on going.
All been fine for last couple of weeks so all sorted i thought.
Today had £800 bill from dealer for 2 visits. I realize it was not their fault about the dodgy diesel but I'm sure I could changed the filters myself a lot cheaper as they never said not covered.
I wonder what chance I have of the fuel company paying up!?

More likely to be threatened with a call from their solicitor than paying up. As we were!

This has nothing to do with the subject
30 years ago a guy from the Aberystwyth area came around every other Wednesday selling fresh fish , one day he called as I was getting ready for milking and he could see the name Gasgoine on the tank
He told me when he was out at sea on the trawlers big gasgoine filters were used to cope with the lower grade cheaper dirty fuel used

I'd rather pay a bit more for decent diesel than have to keep changing the fuel filters. When I had a dodgy batch I had to change the filters 3 times on my JDs, that is six filters which come to quite a lot. Needless to say my two old IHs kept running even though the glass filter bowl was very cloudy!

People don't have trouble with DERV, why should we have to put up with this sh**?
