Does Dyson intend to buy England

I hope you end up with a Knighthood. Sir Cowabunaga of Ceredigion. Services to the EU

This has nothing much to do with the EU. The UK had a 15% VAT rate about 10 years ago, then it went back up to 17.5% for a bit before settling at 20%, which is still cheaper and applicable to less goods than in many EU countries. That is UK's power being exercised over the EU, which is what I've consistently said. That the UK rules itself with very few limitations exercised by the EU that badly effect anyone in the UK. They have indeed harmonised the standards in manufacturing/industry and ensured worker's rights of course.

You should be made aware that before we entered the EU in 1973, the standard rate of Purchase Tax was 25%, having been reduced from a rate of 33% at which it was set in earlier years, which is obviously higher than the current VAT Standard rate of 20%.

You are certainly old enough to remember the 25% purchase tax with even more tax on top for 'luxury' things like cars.

No desperation here mate just stating facts, what’s the lowest rate of vat we can have?

You are arguing that the EU prevents us having low or no VAT levels yet our government currently applies VAT rates higher than is required by the EU, higher than many other EU countries. If our Gov desired lower VAT than currently permitted would we not already be at the lowest rate permitted :banghead: What a daft argument.

Yes, you make the very valid point, which I did not, that some EU countries also levy lower standard rates of VAT than we do and use a lower rate spread over more goods than we do in the UK as well.
I pointed out that some others set a higher rate.

I was on about things that have vat on them charge at 20% or 5% there maybe other rates but if there is Im blissfully unaware
 :banghead: The lowest VAT rate is Zero. There are other items that are 'Exempt' which is not the same but has the same tax currently applies, which is nothing. You can't get lower than Zero. :wacky:

The UK also has by far the highest threshold for businesses registering for and applying VAT on their goods and services. Currently £85,000, under which turnover a business may choose not register, therefore allowing their goods and services to be sold VAT free.

Under EU law, the UK has a derogation for existing 0% goods, but is not allowed to add any new goods.

All the land that Lord Bathurst is due to develop is owned by a Bermudan registered company, 2,500 houses due to go up on some decent (for around here) dirt. Not a penny to pay in tax. Morally wrong or right? It'll be the death of Cirencester.
HMRC need to unloop such loopholes!

Then again if it were you or I, would you be doing the same?? I think it's 250 acres or there abouts, I would be willing to pay some tax if it were mine, maybe not the full rate so registering some offshore would be prudent. But as you can imagine the locals are not pleased having their town ruined by someone who will trouser a couple of hundred million quid without paying a penny in tax.

Back to Dyson:rolleyes:, he has reportedly moved the company HQ to Singapore in order to benefit from that country’s free trade arrangement with the EU for his leccy cars. That would be the tariff free trading that we currently enjoy then, before his favourite project takes effect?:scratchhead:

Best one I heard today was that he was bringing out a new model, called a Moral Vaccum.

More Dyson bashing based on bulls**t. His electric car company was already a Singaporean enterprise before today's announcement, it always has been in fact.

At least have the decency to denigrate the guy for something that's actually true. There is plenty of material if you scratch the surface a bit.
