Dog and stick farming

I always thought it more described the type of farmer who didn't get his hands dirty, and had staff to do all the work, and just wandered about with his dog and walking stick, checking everything was being done to satisfaction. That was how my father used to use it, something to aspire to, rather than being up to ones knees in mud and muck.

The modern equivalent would be the Range Rover driving type who turns up to see how 'harvest' is getting on, but has to go now because its Parents Day at his daughters private school.

Ha ha, a farmer like that would be called a "Gentleman farmer" here.

you're not often wrong but 'dog and stick farming' is very low input...get what you can for little or zero cost....extensive sheep typically ....doubt it work today as it dates from an unregulated age

mind you mum and i were talking about it today if subs ended....ring fence the farm....one sheep/ha.....take what we get
