Dog commands

Attempting to teach new pup to be a well trained cow dog...

Me and Dad work the cattle so want to use the same words.

What commands are people using?

Not cattle dogs, but it’s mad how many commands my sheep dogs pick up over their working life. Going slightly off topic but it’s mad how large their capacity is for remembering different commands.

Off the top of my head there is -

Come by
Away
Lie down
Stand
Here
That’ll do
Get over
Look up
Look back
Catch it
Hold them / watch them
Push them up
Get it (to hit one ewe to turn her)
Keep out
Steady
On the bike
In the truck
In the back
On the back / on the front (which bit of the quad to get on)
Find them
Leave it
In
Out
F**k off (goes and hides out of sight)
What the f**k are we going to do now twig?
Kisses 😂

Same dog also catches rabbits and various other things in the day and on the lamp, goes beating and picking up, ferrets and works long nets, flushes game to the running dogs, goes out digging with the terriers as the marking dog and will mark a fox to ground and indicate which hole it’s nearest to.

Also live in the house and goes to the pub and has been known to sit on a stool at the bar 😂

Aren’t collies incredible dogs?

If it opens and shuts gates too, I'd say that's just about the perfect dog (y)

Divide!

But, seriously, all the above. Varying tone can convey a lot of meaning. For Down or Stand, I prefer "Sit" which I can vary from SIT! (full stop and stand) to sss... (slow down or hesitate). Then add body language, hand signals, etc. To get range, use a whistle. To remove most of the emotion (dog work can get heated at times!) use machine made whistles as they should all be the same but even then can be expressive especially when used by different people.

Away-right
Bye-left
Speak up-bark
Steady-slow walk
Stand & lie down-stop
Look back
Through-jump through the feed barrier
Heal
Out-move away from the stock
That’ll do-we are done

That’s what I use on cattle. The main thing is with the cattle don’t let your dog get in the habit of nipping at their back legs or it’ll end up getting kicked.
