Dogs on leads

I have a friend, she married a farmer from the states, a footpath is at the risk of the user and tresspassers can be, and often are, dispatched (careful with my words, certainly not making a threat) lawfully for walking on private property without a good reason.

Simply put footpaths should exist as they are, and be closed as soon as evidence for miss use is presented to the LA. TO repopen should require objections and reasons why, and if the miss use reoccurs an asbo like order against "Persons unknown" or all users of the path, and permanent closure follows.

I have a camera watching this path as its such an issue. 400-600 users a day at weekends (August bank hol last year over 900) and 200 a day in the week... even %1 of public causing issue would cause 30 acres to be un usable at that level.... I can safely say that 30% are dog walkers and 80% of those are totally irresponsible and criminal in conduct.
Thats 90+ dog sh1!s a day or walking through sheep fields...... every weekend. GO figure. I fenced it off last year and again this year. A new fence and it looks like a 40y old one from all the cut wire.

That is a quote from a CODE which can be different to what the law actually states in an Act of Parliament. A code is usually advisory, not an absolute statement of the law, so be aware and take care. A dog off the lead can still be under the control of it's owner. (Edited to say that with the appallingly low standard of dog training in the UK, most dogs will still be out of control, whether on or off the lead! Just stating facts, folks!).

For example, it is not an offence if your dog chases livestock that has strayed onto your property on it's own initiative, but it becomes a criminal offence if you encourage the dog to chase them out. I am in Scotland so the law may be different in the south, though I doubt it.

My reply is from a dog walkers point of view, I walk mine off lead, I also have good control over them(working dogs), even with the control I have I still choose to pop them on lead when passing livestock just out of respect and common decency even though they are off lead when working around livestock on my permissions. Some dog owners are total idiots I’m afraid and common sense is slowly disappearing from a lot of the population.
Warning signs stating shooting in progress might help.

I find most dog walkers apply similar common sense and only the odd ignoramus, unfortunately that is all it takes to devastate a flock. Had two abort on same Saturday morning last year, neighbour told me he had chased 3 dogs turned out to be from a local farm which were rounding up in lamb ewes. Next day they were in another neighbours dry Hoggs, chased them over fields one hit by car crossing main road tracked them back to farm. Met owner coming out, denied were his but since then no repeat tg.

Reading this post make's my blood boil why joe public think its ok to walk through someone's land without care in the world, we have to stick to all sorts of rules and regs farming, dog worming records ect pointless if half the city's dogs are rambling about our fields leaving poop . I am lucky and don't get many of them but I find the old school way of telling them this is my ground get to (***) works well blowing steam out your ears.

The NFU should be doing more to educate the public tv adds ect. and the good old country file should do a hour long show on the subject to let the public know about our concers

I have just moved a flock onto land at Stourhead National Trust --- it's a job to see the sheep for the walkers at the weekends!
I spent 45 mins sitting in the truck there this morning observing the sheep and counted 48 walkers and 29 dogs ! All under control but it does make me nervous with lambing due to start at the same time as Easter holidays

We have this problem. Observation and enforcement is extremely difficult. Many people allow dogs free rein over our domestic land, grass, wild flowers etc that abuts bridleway. P*ssing and sh*tting a regular occurrence - I find the worse culprits are pairs of dog-walk women lost in conversation with no idea where or what their dogs are up to.
More serious is the complete lack of understanding / respect for the distress loose dogs can cause to ewes with or without lambs. Polite signs are ripped down almost instantly, nailed on NFU yellow signs suffer similar fate but do last longer. Had a couple of incidents recently; one when moving pregnant ewes held by a gate. A family with dog pass by, kids naturally interested as is mum. Dad is holding dog that suddenly lunges and ends up with nose wedged under gate. Ewes panicking. In response to me yelling 'get that effing dog back' and general anger, matey says 'It's ok, they're penned in, you won't have to round them up again'. Second incident was a serial offender with a spaniel and bitza rescue dog. Ewes circling the wagons, dogs at the far side of the field, he's whistling. I jump out the pickup to be greeted with 'the dogs are only chasing the pheasants, not the sheep'. My reaction there was to say 'get those f****g dogs out of my f****g fields now'. Any apology is pointless.
This is not the death and bloody destruction that some of our compatriots have to endure; it is however the daily grind of friction between us and completely unthinking or uncaring owners. Dogs should be licenced and training should be compulsory for both animal and owner. It's another example of how our land is thought to be "theirs".

It is "theirs". We are silly enough to allow it to be purchased one law at a time and one grant and one subsidy at a time. We now largely have no rights at all, we are even told what we may grow and what stock we may put where and when

Time to emigrate?

My day. One of 8 attacked.another 6 missing. 3 dropped down this eve as well. Due to lamb from 21st on.
Thank you public and dog walking off leads. A day wasted. A 12 hour day rounding up 80 scattered ewes from other people' land and crops.
And a loss of 1300 quid off the bat and more to come.
Just when I least need it.

So sad/angry to see that. Hope you have reported to Police and taken photos to put on entrance to paths. We farm urban fringe and with keeping gates padlocked it is a while since we have had this problem, luckily no footpath where most of our sheep are. but have had this in the past so fully sympathise.
