Don’t tell me I now need a new computer

There is a very good reason they won't support Windows 7. Big name websites like Defra etc are big targets and they won't like unsecured systems trying to access their network, nor will they want to unleash a virus on you.

You don't realise how much traffic is going up and down with broadband these days but it is huge amounts of data.

Office 365 is an annual subscription but for 5 machines it is good value, each user also gets a terabyte of cloud storage each and you can install Office apps and OneNote (not everyone uses that mind) on your phone.

CD media is insanely slow. Better to put things on a flash drive.

I'm not sure how much a W10 license is these days, not crazy money I would think.

Jeez. It wasn’t long ago that the NHS was brought to its knees by cyberattack on its Windows XP software...

My own laptop has W9 and I’m getting warnings from websites like YouTube so I’ve just downloaded Firefox instead. It’s free too.

Also cant access your Maps or BPS form with old operating systems.

I have had to buy a new computer to look at maps RPA have an issue with.
It's been like this since November but nothing from RPA to warn of this. I can see lots of people having issues and a panic when the claim window opens!!

Surprising... surely if you are running Chrome as a browser, it is irrelevant? Most of the stuff we access is through a Browser...

Try a Chromebook - does everything I need on a cheap low spec machine
Windows 10 is such a huge programme that basic laptops struggle to run it

On my 2nd 2nd hand Acer Chromebook, both cost around 100 quid and teh second one has a touchscreen wich is lovely! . Only issue is that there are a couple of bits of software I use that needs Windows... :-(

When filling in my BPS or other application stuff, I often have 2 Chromebooks on the kitchen table for checking back and forth, purely because it's a nicer place to be than the Office so I can spread out with paperwork, maps etc!

You would think so. DEFRA and CTS and RPA are all accessed through a browser. Many programs I use work more consistently well on Chrome and if I were to buy a new laptop at the moment it would be a Chromebook.

I use Chrome maybe 60% of the time and Safari 40%. Not used Windows in the last two years. Not used W10 at all.

Its all frcking dutch to me

TBH it’s not a big thing to worry about. If your computer is less than about 5 you are probably on win 10 so don’t worry. If it’s on windows 7 you should have seen a warning on the screen. If so it needs changing or updating. Given the price of basic machines you may as well buy a new one. If your only using the computer for internet stuff pretty much anything will be ok but not necessarily great.

the free windows 10 job no longer works  just had to do both office computers, if your machine isnt a very well specced or new machine it will struggle to run it, we had to upgrade both to solid state drives to help with the speed!
