Don't Drive your Tractor to the pub

I see Somersets most popular police officer has been at it again booking a guy with for driving a tractor to the pub...most possibly just droping in for a pint...a fine and 8 points...why don't they solve daily crime rather hitting easy targets

When you say “Somerset’s most popular police officer”, does that mean he’s a serial offender (pun intended) when it comes to harassing tractor drivers?

In this instance the farmer was charged for driving with no insurance which is a much more serious charge with more serious penalties. You make a fair point though, I would not be legal I as though, I would be insurance for none agricultural use but still classed as driving a vehicle incorrectly taxed and with the wrong fuel! Is it even possible to voluntarily pay to tax a tractor and then run it always on white diesel??

Driving an incorrectly taxed vehicle is an £80 fine reduced to £40 for prompt payment... £250 + the unpaid duty for driving on red... (Interestingly reading the DVLA website as it isn't specified it would suggest you can't snow plough with a tax exempted farm tractor and if tax is paid and always runs on red diesel, either their is a mistake on their webpage or a significant flaw in the legislation!!)

"Tractors

A tractor qualifies as an excepted vehicle if it is designed and constructed primarily for off-road use. An excepted tractor can be used on a public road solely for:
  • agriculture, horticulture or forestry work
  • cutting verges bordering public roads
  • cutting hedges or trees bordering public roads or bordering verges which border public roads

Tractors with a vehicle excise licence - such as a general haulage vehicle - cannot use red diesel either on or off public roads, regardless of whether it is undertaking agricultural, horticultural or forestry work. This is because it is licensed to perform other work and is not therefore assumed to be used solely for agriculture, horticulture or forestry."
Id like to see them Enforce that law regarding clearing snow
when we had the beast from the East i spent nearly 4 days clearing miles n miles around us & it helped all the locals finally get out
Yes it was on Red & i did it for Nowt as we were blocked in also & had to do something, where was i gonna get White Diesel ? suck it oot me Car?
Not once seen a Council Gritter past here, we never do ya only live 2miles from the A1
A Local Councillor backed what i & other farmers were doing & sorted some Diesel money from the council afterwards
but i did it for Free otherwise.
HMRC can do one when its a serious weather event like that was.
Snow drifts were as high as the telehandler in places.
Bet they never seen that against there offices in whitehall (Bloody clueless Townies)

Praise Jesus!

Why solve rural crime by busting some traveller sites and getting all our quadbikes back when we can solve hot coffee fraud! Yay for the hard-pressed rozzers. Free fillet o fish all round!

Nonesense!! If your tractor policy specifies agricultural use only not only would you not be insured going to the pub but also attending a farming protest, a tractor rally, ploughing match, helping neighbours in foods and snow etc etc.. I can drive to the pub in any of our vehicles perfectly legally on our policy, frankly if you can't you need to tell your provide where to stick their policy!!

Ours covers "any agricultural or forestry vehicle the property of the policyholder or in their custordy or control...." "Any person who is driving with the permission of the policyholder" "A Use for Agricultural or Forrestry Purposes, B Purposes of snow clearing , C towing plant or machinery, D Use for social, domestic and pleasure purposes "
Yours might be covered for those options but they have to be specified, they are not automatically on your policy. If you haven't asked for them your broker has put them on but each one costs more which is why a lot are NOT covered for domestic and pleasure. That's straight from the wife who is been an insurance broker for 25years

I will speak to my broker next month but I don't believe we would get a meaningful discount to downgrade our cover, there are plenty of reasons I might be using a tractor on the road for that could be argued as none agricultural, penalties for driving uninsured are pretty strong.

To be fair to the cops on this occasion, I think it was the drug driving that caught their attention rather than coffee fraud.

The discount will be close to nothing. My point is that there are a hell of a lot of tractors driving round that are not covered because the cover is not automatically added. That is not "Nonsense!" that is a fact

I'm sure it was in somerset where a copper pulled me over for having the wrong reg plate on my trailer... He said if I could change the plate over before he finished writing up the ticket , he'd rip it up .... I expect he was salivating to start with as the plate that was on there was for my other car that was off the road, so no MOT, no Tax and no insurance ( was in the garage ) ..

He drove off with the right hump
