Don't Drive your Tractor to the pub

when we go over to Ireland visiting reletives regularly see a 70odd year old woman rolling up for sunday service on an old dexta

She probably has insurance for that.

This guy was using his tractor in a manner he’d chosen not to insure it for. He deserved to be prosecuted, in my opinion - if not for actually using the tractor without insurance, then certainly for giving the policeman evidence that he had been.

Agricultural tractor is taxed and insured as just that-for the purposes of agriculture only. If you could use a farm tractor for SDP on red, everyone would. Also worth bearing in mind that private cars insured for SDP are not insured if used for work related duties, so if your tractor driver uses his own vehicle to nip to the dealers yard for some spares, he isnt insured.

Nonesense!! If your tractor policy specifies agricultural use only not only would you not be insured going to the pub but also attending a farming protest, a tractor rally, ploughing match, helping neighbours in foods and snow etc etc.. I can drive to the pub in any of our vehicles perfectly legally on our policy, frankly if you can't you need to tell your provide where to stick their policy!!

Ours covers "any agricultural or forestry vehicle the property of the policyholder or in their custordy or control...." "Any person who is driving with the permission of the policyholder" "A Use for Agricultural or Forrestry Purposes, B Purposes of snow clearing , C towing plant or machinery, D Use for social, domestic and pleasure purposes "

They’d be insured, but probably not legal to use them for pub transport if taxed as an agri vehicle and running on rebated fuel.

All depends what your insurance policy states too.

If this lad finishes work and goes for a pint or two every night in his tractor while leaving his car on the drive then yes I think the policeman has a point, but if your calling in for a swift half shandy then there is no hope.

In this instance the farmer was charged for driving with no insurance which is a much more serious charge with more serious penalties. You make a fair point though, I would not be legal I as though, I would be insurance for none agricultural use but still classed as driving a vehicle incorrectly taxed and with the wrong fuel! Is it even possible to voluntarily pay to tax a tractor and then run it always on white diesel??

Driving an incorrectly taxed vehicle is an £80 fine reduced to £40 for prompt payment... £250 + the unpaid duty for driving on red... (Interestingly reading the DVLA website as it isn't specified it would suggest you can't snow plough with a tax exempted farm tractor and if tax is paid and always runs on red diesel, either their is a mistake on their webpage or a significant flaw in the legislation!!)

"Tractors

A tractor qualifies as an excepted vehicle if it is designed and constructed primarily for off-road use. An excepted tractor can be used on a public road solely for:

  • agriculture, horticulture or forestry work
  • cutting verges bordering public roads
  • cutting hedges or trees bordering public roads or bordering verges which border public roads

Tractors with a vehicle excise licence - such as a general haulage vehicle - cannot use red diesel either on or off public roads, regardless of whether it is undertaking agricultural, horticultural or forestry work. This is because it is licensed to perform other work and is not therefore assumed to be used solely for agriculture, horticulture or forestry."
