Dont mention the war

This week, a group of Italian mayors and other politicians bought a page in Germany's Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper to remind Germany that it was never made to pay back its debts after World War Two.

It's not just the Italians who are miffed, last year Greece and Poland called for Germany to cough up as well.

Greece and Poland are stepping up their demands for Germany to pay reparations for World War II. This may appear to be little more than an attempt to pander to domestic voters. But, in fact, it’s an effort to ground in history their calls for Europe’s largest economy to show more altruism toward its poorer allies. Berlin should heed this pressure, if not the actual demand for money.

For what the southern European economies owe the ECB, which is effectively underwritten by Germany, I'd say they had their debts paid in full and then some. Maybe that's what they are hoping? Have the debts cleared so they can start another spending spree paid for by someone else?

Punitive reparations imposed on the Weimar Republic (Germany) after WW1 caused the power vacuum that allowed Hitler in and led to WW2. Clearly, memories are fading, though it's not unusual for sabre rattling against foreign powers in an effort to cover up failing domestic policies. Argentina has been doing it for decades with the Falklands.

I wouldn't be sure that the underpinning of the EU by Germany was purely altruistic. The country needed a market for its cars and other goods after all.

Agreed - Germany has a strong economy yet a weak currency held down by the PIGS that allows its export based manufacturing industries to flourish. Every cloud has a silver lining.

My history must be sadly lacking, I thought Mussolini was on the same side as Germany.
Mussolini was but Italy wasn't always as keen. It all got a bit messy in 1943 when he was arrested by King Victor Emmanuel III, factions within the country actually switched to the allies side during the latter part of the war
