Double Chop Silage

Picking up 5ft6in mower rows with a Double Chop was a ballache, if you pushed on you overloaded the cross auger, it would spill over the back and you would have to go around again!
.

Been there bought the t shirt(n)

we had a Martin Markham like that, that wilder would kill a tractor was a dog to drive, we then went to a Kid Side Mounted dirrect cut before the Double Chop

Used to do about 10 acres a day in Blaenberllan with Taarup side mounted direct cut on a 5000, with 3 ton Winfield trailers tearing around

Had a taarup side mounted direct cut here. They were very hard to drive. (Compared to NH double chop).

Going to see a elho 2100 tomorrow.
Not for me. The neighbours jf precision chop is ready to change. He has been quoted 10k to update to a clean sh machine. He only lifts 10ft rows anyway.
I know wagons etc I've been trying to explain. But this is the the way he wants to do it. Keep in mind that he has a brand new taarup single chop harvester in the shed for emergency even though they stopped making them about 15yrs ago.
I don't think he'll notice any difference with the elho in terms of output. But he has some steep ground that the weight transfer from the trailer onto the tractor will help.. Yeah he pulls his trailer doesn't like side filling even though he has plenty of tractors and trailers.
It's the nature of the beast.
The elho cuts seven ft. And can lift 20ft at a pace. With less things to go wrong and the better weight transfer/traction and the ability to zero graze with them I'm surprised there are not more of them around.

Was it a company called Tullow engineering .
Nc made a great single chop but after 5ft and the problem was that the rotar started to vibrate. They unfortunately suffered from Nc desease (rust).
The elho has a 7ft rotar but not as stressed as much a single chop in that it only has to throw the grass onto the auger. The cutting wheel does the blowing with 8knives.
I want to get a look at the silage it has made to check chop length etc.
They are less than half the cost of a jf precision chop

Got speaking to the owner of the only elho 2100 dc that I can find in northern Ireland.
He thought I was ringing looking to buy it.
He kept saying I'm not selling..
I told him that I just wanted a look to see it in the flesh.. He says it's really something made extremely strong and the paintwork is very hard wearing. Hes not selling no way.. So as soon as I get a few fotos I will put them up.

about 15 years ago I drew grass for a neighbour who ran a elho harvester, it seemed to go well and they liked it. They have since went to a JF900.

Elho took over kidd I think.
These 2100s are the answer to alot of questions just now. They split from the main body of the harvester to allow the tractor and trailer to be leave the field. That makes them good for zero grazing and they cut 7ft which is a fairly good cutting width. Not to many passes if it's wet. Then you can mow down 20ft and let it wilt like a precision chop for your silage and you have a decent harvester that you can pull your trailer directly and keep the weight on the back of the tractor.. Good for hilly or soft conditions. Then le piece de resistance.. You can side fill on both sides of the harvester.. Win win

So many definitions of bad silage. So many variables. Digestibility is my main concern.
We try to cut 4 times if we get the weather.
So our grass is never too stemy. The seed mixture is all for cutting often. Dry matter is a headache always.. Getting a wilt on the crop is important.
Then there is the actual ensiling of the grass we use three covers and put lorry covers on top plus tyres. It's a bit of work but a lot less waste and secondry fermentation. We feed silage all year round so we work hard on the silage. It has to be top quality or we lose money. Its that simple

Digestibility wouldn't be too of my list at all, pallatpalati and intake are the most important, so many times I have seen "good" silage that cows just didn't perform on

I take it this is the harvester you're talking about?

I don't think it has much in common with a Kidd, certainly the flywheel and bearings look to be stronger. I'd say it has a lot going for it and it'll suit a lot of people if the price is right

They don't have too many good videos of it working. The price was 15.5k stg three years ago I believe for the full package ie extra flotation wheel on the harvester and something hydraulic about the puh. I didn't get a chance to put him over it. But he said he doesn't use it . Alot cheaper than a poxy zero grazer.. Hell of alot less to go wrong.
