We ran them for 10 years with no real bother. Ploughed 14 to 18 inch furrows. A 650 tyre would run at least about 2 to 3inch down of the last furrow. On medium to heavy going they do not turn the furrow 180degrees over and can leave it a bit open, good for drying out but if left for a while you can get weeds/volunteers growing between the furrows. Agri hire make a bolt on mouldboard extension (£25is) so you can get a wider tyre in the furrow, don’t know if this helps with turning the furrow a bit more.

What’s the thoughts/opinions on the Dowdeswell DD bodies.

What tyres could I get in the furrow ?

I have a 5f DP120 on DD bodies - it's fine at 14" with a 20.8 tyre, but not any wider.

I also have a 7f KV RL100 on no28's, often running at 16". This would allow a 650 tyre to plough ok, on kinder ground, but it'd need weighting for traction.

We have two MF 7620 tractors. One on 520r42, the other 620r42. The one on the narrower tyres outgrips (and so outpulls) the other one by a country mile, and is plough tractor of choice.

Excellent info as always, I thank you all (y)

I've had to give up on the DD dream for this year, starting to plough on Sunday if all goes to plan, mate with a plough coming to have a go to help me out, if it goes ok and he has to run away, I've seen a Dowdeswell MA120 that would initially be reduced to 5 furrows for the MF6290 on 600's but when on 6 will need the MF6499, but thats on 650's hence the question.

All things being equal other than tyre width how can the narrower one out grip the wider one unless not enough weight has been added for grip.

Why keep throwing money at the job with dril after drill, then plough etc etc - perhaps it would be as economical / profitable to doing crop? Your not in silly heavy land are you? The Moore will go when it drys, as it will, before the end of April.

I’d happily leave it until April, but due to being unable to get a price on Spring seed and having to commit to delivery without knowing price I prefer to take a chance in drilling what I have than being held to ransom by Frontier
Plus, Spring cropping the last 2 years has been a waste of time.

Not getting the combi now, will chase the plough with the power harrow and Vaddy

Just to put the cat amongst the pigeons here, I’ve run either 710 or 800 in the dd &dds furrow @14-16” no problem at all , no wideners etc, not perfect but more than acceptable. If conditions are perfect will ideally go on top (ma 145), but doesn’t happen that often! I agree narrow tyres are better but not an option or problem here (av approx 700ac/yr last 15 years), cheers dh

Bite. A 520 on a 42” rim has a long narrow footprint that just digs in and pulls. A wider tyre is designed for floatation, rather than grip, so spread the weight (and hence the grip) over a larger area. The key is the 42” rim.

They were both 42’’ rims in your example.
