Downloading Emails for Windows Live Mail

Going back as far as the early years of this century, I was having my landline and internet with Wanadoo and had a Wanadoo email address. Over time, Wanadoo became Orange and that became EE, but I still retained the Wanadoo address.

By 2017, I was using Windows Live Mail and then, EE decided to give up providing an email service, so I went over to using Gmail and therefor have gmail email addresses, with Mozilla Thunderbird as the program on the computer. After that, I still had Live Mail on my desktop and although I could no longer send or receive emails via it, I could still see all my old email and peoples email addresses going a long way back, which was very useful at times.

I recently I had a new computer and although I installed Live Mail on it I can't see my old emails without logging on to Live mail. The trouble is that my log in username was my old Wanadoo email address, which Live Mail no longer recognises. Is there a way that I can get Live Mail to recognise me?

Your WLM mail will be stored on the old PC as the default for WLM was a pop3 server where it downloads new messages to the HDD.

Now that we often look at email from multiple devices, the default for most software is now IMAP where the messages are stored remotely on your mail server and the PC syncs back and forth.

So to answer your question you need to export your WLM mail from the old PC (or at least your contacts - be a lot easier ) to your new PC. Can be done with a USB drive. WLM was about the most un friendly bit of Microsoft software they ever did, so patience and perseverance will be the name of the game !

I haven't still got the old computer, it went back to Farmplan, and is probably in the skip by now. They managed to extract my data and put it on the new one. Since my post, I have looked at Live Mail again and my old contacts list is there but not the emails. If the missing emails are on my new hard drive, how could I find them?

I wouldnt bet on it - getting a workable export of all your emails from WLM is not a 5min job.. But you could search for a big pile of .pst files..
