The Irish eu commissioner only took up post recently, when Ursula told Hogan to leave she told Ireland that they better put up 2 women out of the 3 candidates, and that 1 of them better be the current commissioner ms. Maginnis. That’s how eu democracy works. Voted for indeed!

Good man Dave! Nothing like a bit of fake news!
It’s the stated policy of the EU commission, to get to more gender balanced commission. Quite right too.
In that respect, Ursula requested two, not three candidates, and that one should be a woman. She did not dictate that Mairead McGuinnes be one of them.
Whether or not Ursula liked it, Simon Coveney would have been the governments preferred candidate to win the commissioner post. However, Simon wished to stay in Dublin to keep his very clever and very sharp eye, on the Sasanachs, in relation to the border. Simon was in fact first man out of the blocks last week, when Ursula went on her solo run. When Simon comes on the phone, you can be sure, he knows what he’s about.

The rest as they say is history.

Another foot in gob statement from Arsula .

“It is true that other countries started earlier, but we preferred safety to shortcuts,” she told La Repubblica.
Quite right too!
As does the American FDA. Who will trial AZ vaccine as data submitted not complete. Decision in April.
And before you grump, it's good news today on its effectiveness with primer jab and yeey! for Sputnik v at 91% !

Mrs Czech grew up in communist Praha. She hates what it became (my post was quite serious).
I have heard that happens
Visited Prague in 1990, I think, on leave with a friend, we still had to get permission to go there from the CO. Great place, bought some titanium climbing kit for a good price, drank some excellent beer and watched the police kick the sh!t out of a bloke who tried to steal our coats in a buffet. Also spent a very enjoyable hour, fairly drunk and eating superb ice-cream, outside the opera house watching the differing reactions of people who trod in a truly massive dog crap. Lots of stunning and sociable girls too...

Oh ho! Now then... either you aren't the pukkah Paddy you've claimed to be, or you are and have been on the black stuff! I've spent enough time in the ROI in recent years, and have enough friends and family from and over there to know full well that the one thing Irishmen do not regard Mr Coveny as is bright! :ROFLMAO:

Such simple psychology - uk public/press start calling names like Arsula, will only warm the eu public more towards here.
Carry on😊
My reasons for wanting to leave the EU were nothing to do with being disliked by their citizens, it's been an eye opener for me that they were only interested in our money.

Well there you go. Doctors differ. In my humble opinion there are a handful of extremely competent politicians over here, I would trust to to the right thing, and do it competently. Coveney would be top of my list. I would throw Pascal O’Donoghue, Leo and current Taoiseach M Martin in there as safe and competent. The rest ..... who cares.
If there was a transfer market on this island, I would put Robin Swann NI Unionist Health minister, as an absolute must buy. Competent man in extremely difficult circumstances.
PS: Coveney as agriculture minister, was very well accepted by farmers.

I just don't understand the calls for her resignation and people wondering why Angela Merkel dispatched an incompetent politician to Brussels in the 1st place. Just remember the calibre of people the UK nominated to be EU commissioners such as Neil Kinnock, Chris Patten, Peter Mandelson and Leon Brittan. All people the prime minister of the day felt a loyalty to, but wanted as far away as possible due to either their uselessness or the embarrassment factor of having them close at hand.

Slight understatement there me thinks. Whilst some bullpoo was written about her, a fair chunk was true and NATO was alarmed at the shambles. It is amazing how she got to where she is.
classic case of being promoted out of the way! regular thing in some industries, to get rid of a shop steward, promote him meant a new union and all his power vanished.

Well, we agree about Messrs Martin, Donohoe and Swann, but the others are time wasters.

I think Donohoe is the brightest of the good three, and by some way - I know someone who studied with him - and he is by all accounts a very pleasant fellow too.

Mr Swann is, and I don't mean to be patronising, the most surprising of them; his background and earlier history don't really inspire but, having been thrown in at just about as deep an end as one can imagine for a Health Minister, he has proven to be superb - it astonishes me that the DUP leadership slag him off, they should be doing everything possible to court him. :banghead:

Michael Martin is competent, much like David Cameron was, but I wouldn't trust him when out of sight.

She got a truly appalling press as Defence Minister in Germany, quite deservedly; and the probable next Chancellor over there is already putting the boot in, we must assume that he knows what he is at.

First in Germany she's seen as a centrist. Merkel s longest serving minister. Re defense,
You should look at where she started from. She was put in as defence minister because of the state it was in. She sacked the senior general, a darling of the right, over refusing to sort out bullying andsexual abuse.
How fast can you build tanks?

Nah, she screwed it up right royally. Buggered around with procurement; tried a regimental reorganisation which was a major morale killer; didn't control spending or recruitment or retention. And, worst of all, she made promotion to high senior rank a thing dependent on interview with the Defence Minister - the very last thing that a politician should do, because it stops the military speaking truth to power, they just tell them what they want to hear!

I've a chum I was a Bar School with who is an officer in their equivalent of the TA - and a fervent Merkel fan too - and have had it all from him. He's got no political axe to grind, but can't stand the woman on the basis of what she did and tried to do.
