Lot of people in Derbyshire clamp brewers grains under silage, but get into Lancashire they've never heard of it.
They either pit a layer under the grass or put a wedge down the wall side (it helps weight the side sheets down), or I've even seen people sprinkle it on in between loads of grass (makes taking silage samples interesting). When buckraking make sure you tip plenty of loads of grass on top before you roll and don't pit the grains too deep, otherwise you get a mess that is horrible to drive on, it's like driving on the sea!

Why is it scarce at this time of year? I thought it would be readily available. I ve ordered 4 loads to try it and see.
I dont think our silage is bulking up all that good either.

Lots of people got less silage than expected and looking to fill pits with draff. Been a few distilleries broken down too which is also affecting supply.

We're filling another pit next week and can't get anymore. It was booked in May though.

Yep. Luckily they seem to break down quite regularly though which sometimes means cheap draff.

Been doing exactly that today. Got 320 tons of draff and 120 t of tatties to mix in with it.

We stopped layering tatties in our silage, the cows dug through the silage to get to the tatties, we found they wasted far too much. This was in feed trailers.
It seemed to drive them absolutely mental, like they were pee'd.

I never got any draff in the end! Held off cutting silage waiting for it but it never arrived. Supply couldnt meet demand

Several ran out of water. They couldn't supply enough to finish our last pit.

I heard Harbro have lost a contract for a 1000 ton a week of draff,it is going to AD plants instead. Big loss to the livestock industry up here.

Big AD plant near me taking 150 odd tons a day of maize, rye and other stuff that would make silage.

Draff is byproduct of whisky making. Whats left of the barley after its been used
