As regards my post asking about chisels and punches I don't expect much has changed since the question "Which punches? Nov 12th 2017 was asked on TFF.

I have a draper expert 1/2" set which is best part of 20 years and still in very good order. The ratchet in it is actually one of the nicest I have ever used.

I bought a 1/4" halford set recently and it seems good, but the ratchet doesn't feel so nice.

Draper stuff is generally good enough for non-pro use, not quite so painful when tools get lost!

Generally, most cheapish/midrange tools actually seem to be better than they used to be - can't remember breaking a spanner or splitting a socket for some years, while cheap spanners did used to be junk. Worth buying decent screwdrivers though

I have a few Teng tools which seem very good, however one Teng ratchet is mostly good, but it has a very annoying tendency of locking up if the direction level gets so much as the lightest of knocks while in use.

How can a mere farmer get one?
I had to show them my business debit card that said commercial on it and that was ok. But then a supervisor turned up and said it wasn't enough so thinking on my feet I had to show them pictures of something I was in the middle of welding up on my phone and luckily had some pictures of something I'd taken apart to remember how to put it back together and I was reluctantly given one. They said I needed a business card showing what I did but I just said all my fixing and fabrication work was had by word of mouth so didn't have one.

if you're talking 'proper' punches then look no further than Mayhew punches. They're American and I haven't found a regular supplier but they are awesome tools.

Can't beat Halfords Professional/Advanced as far as I'm concerned. Was always lead to believe it was the same as Draped Expert. I can't rate it highly enough. Lifetime guarantee and if I've broken something, just pop into Halfords and they replace it no questions asked. The only bits which aren't covered are ratchets, but they sell the mechanism separately anyway.

I have spent a long time building up a mostly Teng collection of tools, but stopped buying them when I had to take one in for warranty. I was asked to produce an invoice, which I didn't have, and promptly told the lifetime warranty was only valid with a purchase invoice.

Not impressed, I tried another Teng agent, and was told the same thing.

So I will never buy another Teng tool again. Lifetime warranty on my other Snap On and Halfords tools means lifetime, no proof of purchase required. Halfords in particular is great, as you can get an exchange any day of the week including Sundays.

Teng = Total farce! Their ratchets are shite as well!

I think teng are sh*te bought some starting out 20 years ago and thought they were very well packaged cheese.

I don't think right now there's much to touch the halfords pro stuff for price v quality, maybe bahco?

I've a 20 year old draper expert socket set, one hinge on the blow moulded case is broken so you have to be careful with it. one extension is a bit tight from that time I sledged on it repeatedly driving a bolt out of a wishbone and a lot of the chrome is worn off the top of the ratchet. it's gotten dogs abuse over the years and not broken anything. only fault is it's 12 point which was the more common style at the time.

What is saving with Halfords trade card and can it be used for anything

20% on tools and up to 30% on other things. Can be used on most things motor related but not on bikes.
