Drill Counter Problem...

Hello everyone,

Giving the seed drill a bit of maintenance the other day, came across a problem in that the acre meter has not got much life left in it.

The acre meter runs on the drive chain, land driven, when the counter reaches 100, the drill has sown a hectare.

The counter itself is a lovely thing, made by ENM, English Numbering Machines, long gone as the company who made this, now a American company, with no interest in this stuff!

The counter has a ratio on 25:1, so that 25 turns on the shaft advance the clock by one digit, coupled witht he size of the sprocket, it's pretty critical to keep the ratio right, to keep the whole thing accurate.

The shaft is loose, worn internally somewhere, the counter is a sealed unit by the looks, certainly not an easy task to take it apart.

So, Im looking for a new clock, the size of the thing does not bother me, I can make something up to fit, neither does the sproket size, again, I can make something to fit. the 25:1 part does however, I cant for the life of me find a counter of any type with the same ratio, or even anything that is near enough, 12.5:1 for example.

Any suggestions, anyone?

Maths question now...

I have found a counter that will suit, but its ratio is 10:1, rather than the 25:1 I would, ideally require...

So, will this work? Rather than 100 measuring one hectare

25:1 Clock = 1 hectare = 100 = 2500 turns of the shaft

10:1 Clock = 1 hectare = 250 = 2500 turns of the shaft

Am I correct, this is assuming no sprockets are changed, just the counter, and it's ratio.

Sounds logical to me.....

What about a basic counter off a bale wrapper? A simple sensor with a magnet on the sprocket that counts every revolution. Just a matter of sorting out the ratios to keep the numbers sensible.

Hmmmm, something like this will be a last resort, cogs turning on chains, no electric, no wires, much simpler!

Sounds about right to me to(y)

As long as you know 2500 turns on the shaft is 1ha you can use any ratio clock and just account for it in the maths.
My old Fiona drill was 350 on the clock to the acre which always seemed a random number to me, but my df1 is 100 to the ha which was easy. Converted it to digital now so it just tells me how many ha it’s done in hectors.

I think you're correct with your logic, but it's now easy - with the 10:1 ratio, you have an acre meter instead.
