Drill filling ideas.

After inspiration from TFF I am mainly using farm saved seed.

At the moment I fill lots of seed bags. Which take up a lot of space in shed. Then cart them out to field every day with fertiliser. Load with manitou.

I'm thinking a simpler way would be to have hoppers I could just fill every night. With enough for a days drilling. I never get drill hopper completely full using 500kg bags of seed. Just put 1 in at a time. It's a health and safety hazard untying and tying off bags.

If I had 5 hoppers each holding about a ton that would give me 50 acres drilling. I've seen millennial farmer on youtube with similar bins he gets from monsanto I think it is. Could just have a slide to stop and start seed flow. So could fill hopper to max.

Anyone done anything similar?

Thought it was more common place down in Aberdeenshire for this kind of setup. Pretty sure one of the udny contractors used to have a df1 or 2 tank mounted on the forklift with shutters as you say. Sure I’ve seen a few down that way before similar

Put a partition in a grain trailer with an auger on the tailgate to load the drill. I have seed at front and fertiliser at the back of my trailer I built. Holds 11 ton fert and about the same of seed. Then use a double door at the rear.

I use a tote bin, it holds a ton and half,or a high lift trailer 5 ton, or a rear mounted auger on a 15 ton trailer
I personally like the tote bin,handy for fert.

Far better with a ten ton hopper trailer with a hydraulic auger.
Doesnt tie up a manitou all day
Fills just as quick and far safer Then a hi lift trailer or big bags
I bought richard western one at auction for £1700
No bags, no mess

There are a few commercially made poly versions like these, but I have also seen home made or local fabrication / engineering workshop make the same thing out of sheet metal

Scoop into pile, transport out to field, pump out into drill.

Alternatively you or a helper could fill said bucket through the grain-door of a trailer, and the auger bucket could be used in the cattle enterprise (ie split cost between two enterprises on the books)

Yes. We do. Use auger bucket for filling bags at moment. Often working away from home so not really practical.

Just fill a flat trailer at moment. Haul it to field and sorted for day. I like the bin idea. Fill these with auger bucket. Wouldn't even have to take them off trailer.

Would save bags taking up room in shed. Safer and could completely fill drill hopper.

Thats impractical

You can get a hopper trailer with two compartments and two augers
I used one in oz 35 yr ago
I dont know its justified to have a forklift sat out all day in a field for weeks

Isn't that what it is for!

My first drill filler was an old penny and porter dryer mounted on a farmhand stackhand wide chassis.
It was quite effective till i got the western one.
The western one was also used as a chaser / buffer bin at harvest too

Not when you have thousands of tons of muck to spread, a drier to run , cattle to feed, and bales to load.
I dont suppose youbother with any of that being an extractive farmer
