Drill set up

Hello,
I’m thinking of changing my drill set up. I currently run an accord 4.8m tine drill. I sumo then press in September but drill mod November to combat black grass so 95% of the time I have to run a powerharrow infront of me drilling. I’m trying to get so I can drill in one pass with tractor so don’t know whether a 4.8m front press on the drill would make good enough seed bed or to change to a 4m combination drill. Was wondering if anyone had any experience with this idea. Thank you

If you need to PH mostly surely a combi is a no brainer but you won't get the output (but obviously its more weather proof and you don't need another man and tractor). Have you tried using a PH or press after the sumo in Sep?

I normally always press week after I sumo in September. I never dare PH in September incase it comes wet. I grow and help another farmer with potatoes so October is usually tied up by them so I’m more edging toward combi. I won’t cover the acres in a day but overall I don’t think I’ll be any slower really

If your power harrowing with a 4m and drilling with 4.8 then I wouldn't have thought a 4m combi would be any slower and in a tricky year You'll only have worked ground that's drilled.

Yeh that’s what I’m thinking. My agronomist hates the powerharrow as he says stirs up to much soil for blackgrass so seeing if different solution but to get a good seed bed here I need it really. And at this present time direct drilling will not suit.

Could you change your system a little?

Low disturbance legs on your sumo, roll it a week after, then follow it with a disc (drilling discs only) drill as late as you dare?

I would agree with your agronomist, it would mean less pressure on your chemical coctail.

It works for us on heavy clay, using a cheap older rapid with the front discs out of work. However, last week of October is pushing it, considering heavy drill and heavy soil…

I have looked at that but with potatoes in the system I can’t guarantee doing anything in October. I’m fairly on top of blackgrass now so drilling earlier would be an option. Last autumn obviously everything went well and would of worked but two previous years been a battle right till Christmas to get drilled and in the end had to get a contractor in with a combi for last 40acres.

Be much better and profitable to change your rotation rather than maul crops in that late in the year just to help blackgrass.

Surely by mid November it's about getting it smacked in the ground quick. Fewer drilling days by then.
You'd want as many machines going as can get. Probably same amount of man hours, but more done in a day.
Wouldn't want to slow down to just a single combi

What about a 4m sabre tine. They are light fast lower distance and can direct drill a few bits if you decide to in future. I hate late drilling as I feel your always waiting to be caught out and fail to get pre ems on. I either get on and drill in Oct or put it in spring

I only have 220 acres of wheat. Only have one tractor and myself. There’s not enough money in it to have extras for me.
What meant was imo, you'd get more done in a day with your tine drill following 4m pH, than a single combi.
But if u only have yourself and one tractor that obviously puts a different spin on it

If you are who I think you are ( PE15 location ? ) your lands kind enough to go with the Sabre Tine after the Sumo and Press imho ;)

My bad, didn't read it properly.

If you're already running a power harrow across it in front of a drill and you're on your own with one tractor surely a combi is a no brainer?

It's not gonna be any slower than you are already going over it twice to do the job

If it gets wet you lift up go home and it's all drilled you've not got power harrowed ground lying

And a combi is a very universal bit of kit
