Drilling anyone?

@teslacoils I feel your pain. Not one of 800 ha drilled yet. Buggy been stuck a few times this week.

I'm pleased this year I only farm 100ha rather than last year's 1000ha.

Budget done on nil crop. Sold grass as standing crop. Mud tier and bps. Bank rang in October incase I need to ask for a repayment holiday and just pay the interest.

I've oat and barley seed in the heap if needed. Still seven weeks before I say we would stop.

At worst I'll run the subsoiler through it in July, then power Harrow it level for a seedbed. Will be a cracking BG kill!

There's a middle ground between throwing money at a low potential crop & fallowing the land. For a fallow to pay better you need to be fixing a major problem e.g. multiple blackgrass hits with stale seedbeds or remedial drainage work that gives you a decent future yield boost, otherwise you're doing nothing to cover your fixed costs. All you need to do it produce a gross margin that exceeds the marginal production costs of fuel, overtime, spares, drying costs and you're starting to pay off the truly "fixed" costs like rent, owner's salary, depreciation, office, professional fees etc.

Anyone on chalk / limestone brash, managing to make progress planting spring cereals,by following plough closely with combi drill. If you are it would be great to see some pics of kit in action. Thanks

@Devon Dumpling did a bit last week I think. Not much else going on around here as it is still raining most days. The forecast is better for next week, but then next week never comes...

All the brash here has been drilled with WW, unfortunately the heavy stuff is destined for Spring cropping, too wet to even plough here. Did start to dry up nicely end of last week but rain yesterday/night has put it all back to square one again. Dont think we've had more than 4-5 dry days on the trot since Autumn.

When Cotswold Brash has water standing on it in hollows you the ground is sodden!!

Heard locally of 4 sprayers getting stuck, a plough being winched out and someone trying to spread fertiliser at 40k, reasoning that speed means not getting stuck. Patience will be a virtue this year, that’s for sure .
