Walked some this afternoon, dried out nicely, a decent crust on the surface but very wet just below the surface, next week should get going again with some SW.

I really got carried away today while waiting for a couple of headland to haze off I rolled 20 acres of winter wheat. Some october drilled 2nd wheat and some december drilled after beet next to it.ATTACH=full]863459[/ATTACH]

so no wheels turning around here other than ploughs.
Big decision here tomorrow is whether to re-plough what was ploughed in September.

Problem goes back to the dry autumn in 2018, crops planted in tilths of idea structure, dry winter, dry spring, dry summer, ploughed up like dust in September, turned to mud, October - no frost since.

Quite unlike 2012/13, which all ploughed up like plasticine in September, shed off the rain until February, only to succumb to three weeks frost with a wonderful natural tilth everywhere by end of March.

On the plus side, however, looks less and less like planting any SOSR here this time.

Unless it has drastically slumped . . . . .

Same old problem here - interesting random mix of clays and shales - some has, some hasn't.

Decision variable is how long it's going to stay dry - 5 days and we'll go shallow, 10 days and we might go ploughing, 15 days and it's another drought and I'll be giving up.

Late start today as we had abit of rain this morning didn’t get to where we wanted to be tonight but may get there before it rains tomorrow. Ground is all like bloody concrete, doesn’t matter if it’s ploughed , min tilled or stubble .

I may well regret it but at the moment rolling seems like the right thing to do. It's nice and dry and the forecast is dry for a couple of days which should give it a chance to settle.View attachment 863228View attachment 863229
Dust flying on rolls here today too and we aren’t even on the beach.....

I have direct drilled everything this spring and where it hasn’t flooded it’s coming through ok. If I had moved the soil at all it would be no better, probably much worse.

Just wait till it will travel and the surface is dry enough to crumble then drill into it. Don’t bother about what’s deeper down. Leave it undisturbed. It’s been a bit slotty in places but best compromise.

I have ploughed ready for the beet as it won’t cope as well with slumped wet heavy land where it’s going this year and there is time yet for that to weather down to a tilth.
