Drilling anyone?

Still too wet underneath here, and too many wet spots to go around or get stuck in.
Locally there is a quaddy and challenger chained together pulling a 12m Horsch Sprinter. Drill will go, but one tractor will not pull it.

I am reminded as to why I don’t like any spring drilling on this farm.
I’ve only got one field that didn’t get drilled last Autumn, which was only because the seed never turned up.
I have also decided that I might re-drill the 50%of the OSR that got eaten by CSFB, if conditions come right and it might even get Direct drilled.

However, my neighbour who we share farm with has got 95% of his farm to drill that didn’t get drilled with winter crops.
It might look like it is drying well on top, but it’s like a rice pudding underneath. Despite 6 days of glorious sunshine, there is no way it will drill yet!

Note to oneself: Maybe I should block this thread for a fortnight!

Hmmm. Having a closer look with a spade and even stuff that had a tine through it in the autumn is as sad as bulls liver. It has an inch of hard dry crust on top which is quite deceiving.
Waiting a bit then plough the lot and drill as soon as it dried enough. Probably be drilled up by mid April. Might even be time to get some useful weathering on it.

Late direct drilled wheat has been a disaster here where there is even the smallest amount of clay. Either drowned out or capped over. Won’t ever be trying that again. Been ok on the sand though.
Moral of the story: plough heavy land early and dry. Let the weather break it down.
to be fair it was the 3 weekends in feb of way more rainfall and no chance to get away that caused our capping/drowning but on again now and going in well ,so live in hope

All soil here is like cack, but the thought is that in another week we will get most drilled with farm saved oats. Digestate, blw spray, fungicide and pgr. Soil won't be better without a crop.

My daddy is working on the "get it fit for wheat" plan, and will broadcast a mix of cereal seeds, then drag then in when it's warm. Will then plough them in and get a good start for winter wheat.

Trying direct drilling some spring barley today after failed rape. Probably doing it all wrong but don’t won’t to move it because it would be horrible. Hope it grows ok, sept/Oct can’t come soon enough for me so can start again. We did get anything drill last autumn.
