Is this the voice of dire experience coming to the fore there, perhaps, glasshouse?

:playful::playful:

Fortunately, it's been drizzling all day with us, so no new drilling done and no 3rd re-drilling yet and, thanks to all the woke objections listed on another thread on this forum, still absolutely no N on here.

:joyful::joyful::joyful:
Yes, i have drilled into frost before, it didnt come to much

So much for the dry week that was forcast, it dark, dank and drizzle all day. well unlike the rain, any hope of January drilling has now evaporated :rolleyes: Cant even get on with winter ploughing.
Yes, same here, bit depressing to be fair, got contractor coming tomorrow with the plough see if we cant get the last 2 fields done, only small ones and historically dry. Not liking the look of next week's forecast, it just never lets up.

Sent the old man with the plough yesterday to see if it was fit on one of the last bits of light ground, he landed back in the yard 20 minutes later as it just wasn’t fit ?. Looks like an ever increasing area of spring barley ?

We've drilled spring barley into frost. Came fine, no difference to where finished night before.

Your post, Chae1, implies that your spring barley was actually fit to drill before your frost.

This is entirely different to drilling where it's only just the frost making it temporarily possible to travel on ground which still needs to dry up for a week or three

I'm tempted to stick some wheat in going on doom and gloom on here.

Ploughing fields at home out of ley and heavily mucked, ground in good condition. Would just need to buy seed.

Going to be spring barley galore at harvest.
Dont even think of it youre too far north for ww at this time of year. Unless you want to be combining in November !!! Spring wheat would do really well though and cut a lot earlier.

Does spring wheat ever do REALLY well ??
Yes after potatoes or beet drilled in Feb it can outyield winter wheat on a poorer slot in the rotation . I have combined 4 ton of feb sown s wheat but yield does tend to fall sharply after patricks day drilling. Scotland with its long daylight summer days would suit it more than further south. But having said that im losing faith fast in later spring crops harvest can drag on forever in a dull year. I had s wheat rape and beans still to combine when the weather broke in Sept and when the thing was eventually tidied up the shine was well gone off. Spring barley on the other hand has its own drawbacks but at least its cut in August .

I had all my wheat in by October 31st ( chalk downland !! ) with 50ha of Winter Beans to do I just didn't get a window I was happy with until the frosts on Monday and Tuesday

Previous experiences in 2000/8/12 all showed drilling in frosts to be better crops than mauled in Nov/Dec crops, it just gets a bit nervous when by mid Jan it's been as mild as anything!!

Anyhow, a tentative start at 4.30am saw a bit in before the frost lifted, luckily I was on at 11.30pm Monday night and and keeping going all night saw it all in by the time the frost was out Tuesday morning

Gone in really well, the biggest issue with drilling late is probably going to be lateness of harvest??
So, probably DD wheat this autumn...

Is the pale colour frost, or just chalky soil?
