Drilling anyone?

Cheap as chips AND lightweight tractors.

Looks like a perfect job on a shoestring budget. I'm impressed when I see the big boys on this forum with big modern direct drills, and equally impressed when I see a set-up like yours.

We had a mint MF30 that we sold and replaced with a suffolk coulter Accord to mount on the power harrow. Often wished we'd kept the MF30 and maybe just altered the harrows so they would cope with a bit of trash.

Could I ask what sort of discs are you using? Just discs? Packer? Short discs? Etc?

Set of quivogne 3m I bought from York sale. They have some weight to give some bite and are long enough you can get through anywhere that’s a tad sticky, one of the best things I bought in a while. I just leave it as is after they have been through.

My whole cultivation, drilling and rolling equipment runs to the grand total of 2.5k (excluding the tractor) :)

Look as though they leave it reasonably level. Difficult to tell from a photo, but looks to leave it better than my Simbas.

I think if I disced with my Simba, then weathered, then went through with a MF 30, then it would be a bit unlevel.

I have the back discs set quite flat but in the end if I keep the seed rate up a bit it rarely matters, I only try to get 50mm of depth to just bury the seed

Yes, not sure how he would have got on with an 8 metre vaderstad with 400 hp up front.

I put some in earlier with my Simba ones and the combi. Not brilliant but not mauled. Results are better than expected seeing the amount of rain we have had since. Discs £1750 drill similar on existing ancient Rabe power Harrow.

We put our first bit (21 ac.) of wheat in for the season, on blow away sand. Had to leave part where heap of beet had been, looked like it was ready to start blowing on Friday......... any how 8 mm. of rain over night will have put pay to that, as it will to further wheat drilling on heavier land.
2019 will go down as the first year we have never drilled a grain of winter wheat (as I’am sure it will for many). That said looking at the barley...... I’am not sorry really.

Pictures please we used to have a ih 511 drill

Have already put many pristine examples of the 511 up here previous, farmec860 - but not much chance now of us going here again before Easter.

In fact, our 511 was quite the latest technology hereabouts last autumn - we also have a couple of (much older) 6/2s.

edit :- fifteen years or so ago, I decided to make up our own specialist 8m bean drill here using the 511 with two 6/2 wings.

In the event, just ran out of time to do this and had to buy ourselves a 6.6m Weaving instead.

Yes, we've used both of them this time putting in grain crops straight on the plough.

The I-Hs never give up except for an occasional broken leaf in a springtine every 10 years or so, but the wings on the Weaving loudly complain with every bit of hard going.

In fact, we've now doubled up on each wing's wheels, just to try to keep them out of trouble as much as possible.
