Drilling anyone?

Got going today, this wind is really drying things up.

Odyssey at 185kg/ha off the heap.
This field was left untouched after we finished lifting beet in jan. A good deep pass with the Pigtail to open it up and let the air in yesterday and springtine and drill today.

My mate should be getting going on the roll later once he's fitted the duals.

If blackgrass is a big issue for a farmer surely the best you can make of such a year as this is fallow / cover crop/fertility build ............ maybe graze and sort it out big time ??

Ok it's going to hurt financially this year but you can not farm one year at a time!

Not just for black grass, I think this is what we are going to do. Salvage what we can from the winter wheat, we had to roll the dice in Jan but never expected to get the rain we got but hey ho another time it would have been fine.

Pop in some spring barley. I did try and get some spring wheat seed but couldn’t get any in Nov and the prices are nuts. Get some Cover crops in and focus on getting 2021 off to a good start

the year we failed to grow soya we planted a diverse multi species cover crop and took no output from that 40ac that year - it cost us

ever since them that field has yielded much better than it ever did in the past, it was like we had pressed reset on the soil

if i added up the extra output over the 5 or 6 years since i suspect the loss of a year with no output has more than bern recovered

i keep saying it but you can not farm 1 year at a time !

It's drying ok. As usual the old man says it won't be drying underneath. As usual, I will resist pulling the drag through it.

Will aim to plant early to mid April straight into the soil. Seed sent of for testing today. Will book dresser for a fortnight time.

Will put wheelings in tomorrow simply to test for wet spots, and spray off the rubbish over the next week.

I may well regret it but at the moment rolling seems like the right thing to do. It's nice and dry and the forecast is dry for a couple of days which should give it a chance to settle.

Finished neighbours barley today and back on to their spring wheat , nothing else dry enough there so tomorrow one drill on our spring wheat and the other one will make a start on our beans . Monday both drills back at neighbours on vineing peas . Well that’s the plan give me ten mins and it may all change .

March 2020, you know the really wet autumn and winter we had...........10 days time and I'll be hoping for a nice rain!

When was the last time we saw a 10 day forecast without any blue dots....! Pretty sure it was 6 months ago for me! Watch how we now get no rain for 6 months...

how long do you think you have this time of year before roling knocks chits off. we drilled yesterday, Wednesday, must it be rolled tomorrow or can it wait til Saturday?

Not pretty but I’ve done worse in the spring, seed mostly covered will hopefully do a light roll soon also. This is hanslope clay. Nice to be doing something!

Another 10mm in the last day, so that’s this next week fecked for anything other than some light stuff

They will soon warm up. If cereals go in well they will be fine. Different for peas or beet or maize.

It has rained every day this week, so a few more days without rain required before the drill leaves the shed here. 2-7mm daily rain instead of 10-30mm, so an improvement.
