Drilling anyone?

I have direct drilled everything this spring and where it hasn’t flooded it’s coming through ok. If I had moved the soil at all it would be no better, probably much worse.

Just wait till it will travel and the surface is dry enough to crumble then drill into it. Don’t bother about what’s deeper down. Leave it undisturbed. It’s been a bit slotty in places but best compromise.

I have ploughed ready for the beet as it won’t cope as well with slumped wet heavy land where it’s going this year and there is time yet for that to weather down to a tilth.
If you are growing beet I'm not sure you've got heavy land, or not where you grow beet.

Talking to some chaps on the Estate on Sunday and they have a sugar beet harvester booked in for Friday 20th to take up the beet in two fields.
Half of one field looks more like a paddy field than anything else. I think they might struggle...or make a right mess.

The local AD set up( 22 miles away) still have 900 acs of fodder beet to lift which I think is 40 days work. They had to stop using beet in November ( in AD plant) as they could nt lift and even the 100 acs or so lifted and stacked on headlands was too wet to pick up with the Maus or access with trailers. They had heaps of rye and maize silage though and mixed with food waste( which has increased suddendly following picking up new contracts). Looks like end of May to finish lifting , ground going back to maize.

Their ground must be ruined, cant think of anything worse for soil condition.

Where the heck did this rain come from ??? Its only 4 degrees here and heavy drizzle started 4 pm yesterday and not stopped, about 10 mm so far. Forcast last weekend gave a good week . Not even thinking of drilling but just want to get liquid N on . Managed 300 acs on my own crops Tuesday but have 2500 acs waiting on contract .
