Started yesterday.Anyone drilling again now? I see a few drills running on lighter ground locally. We're doing game covers then will switch to spring barley tomorrow. The topsoil is damp but would go. Go down 3" and it is still quite fragile underneath.
Stuff drilled 1st March just coming through, really glad I drilled it and didn’t roll
Nothing to stop you rolling it once it has at least 3-4 leaves but before stem extension. Good move
Surely even if its not doing as much good as in the autumn its still doing some good.Drilling the beet tomorrow.
Different approach this year. Paraplowed the wheat stubbles in the autumn. One high speed very shallow pass with power Harrow today which produced a very nice tilth on the heavy and the sand. Firm but fissured underneath.
Drill beet tomorrow all being well when it has dried off.
Same approach with the Spring barley after stubble turnips. Paraplowed last week. Quick pass with power Harrow, then drill. Not so sure of wisdom of paraplowing when it's wetter underneath in the spring but the sheep and a loader or three had packed it down. Worked alright last year.
Drill and cart look a bit like an old Canadian “Flexi-Coil” but know doubt @Brisel will be along soon to tell us what it is.I spent 3 yrs driving a fw60 auto a few years go she was a beast. What sort of drill is that?
I think @Flintstone has a 210 or 215 on a 4.8m.......Brisel and others
how many horses would you reckon your 6m Claydon actually needs in medium soil assuming front tines set fairly shallow (say 25mm deeper than A share) ?
I have 210 on a 3m hybrid and was guilty sometimes of drilling too fast...added 2 legs to make drill 3.43m and tractor still playing with it.
Now wondering about 4m or even 4.8 ...
12 years ago i had 180 hp on a 3.45 V-drill and needed all available, but soil was more raw back then, plus i was running front tine too deep (probably).
