We always found spring strip till difficult, esp with cover crops.Lots of images of drills going on social media. Fog this morning stopped liquid fertiliser on wheat. At 2pm the crop is still wet, so although it is warm, it is not drying at all. Ripping game strips next week so I'll see how they come up but I don't see it being fit to drill for another week yet. What we need here is sun and wind to strip the moisture out of the topsoil.
Do you wish you'd gone drilling?I thought about drilling today for about 30seconds, then thought rugby and the pub! Come on England!
I drilled on the last forecast of snowSnow forecast for next weekend, so think we'll leave it a bit longer.
Was thinking about this the other day. Some of our best crops of spring barley have been sown while its actually snowing!I drilled on the last forecast of snow
Didn’t quite go to plan seed went in well and snow came which was then soposed to be around for a bit me thinking it would insult and allow seed to germinate but snow came and went along with a pissload rain it’s just poking it’s head through now so time will tellWas thinking about this the other day. Some of our best crops of spring barley have been sown while its actually snowing!
Just coincidence I'm sure.
Glad got in with last heatwave slot,as can not walk on fields now as like a bog ?
Plenty of wet looking fields here showing it was not dry enough in some fields
A week earlier does not trump cold and wet on heavy land
It must be real compromise these days for those of you with serious blackgrass problem especially if you farm drought prone souls , whether to drill early IF ideal conditions but end up with a carpet of blackgrass,or wait till late ideal conditions but crops yield reduced by drought rather than blackgrass
Thank goodness when I was farming 20 yrs ago on extremely thin Cotswold Trash, blackgrass was of no concern.
Every farm is different, and farmed accordingly . One thing for sure in Farming and that is no two years are the same and nothing is set in tablets of stone. Our medium to light land is always easier in spring cropping. Even in the dry last year it out yielded the heavy stuff. Went in better, didn't bake like concrete and the roots get down easier. The snotty stuff is either too wet or too dry in spring and very rarely is it easy.
