Drilling turnips during hot weather

We are done harvest and got some turnips to go in, its totally dry and no rain due but a job to get out the way.
With a lot of fingers crossed it got to rain at some point and least its on the ground.
What is a worry we have temps of 36c due this weekend, if drilled obviously shallow would the heat effect the seed making it dry out and never germinate?

Sure you will be fine as long as it doesn’t chit and then stay dry. Mine at cotyledon stage and monitoring very closely for flea beetle.

Dunno. But we are drilling some tomorrow. Disced to dilute chopped straw very closely followed by power Harrow and quite heavy ring roller. Some moisture there. Drilling with unidrill which has heavy press wheels. Hoping the depth of drilling and consolidation will draw moisture so they don’t just chit and die if we get just a shower.
Yeah I know. You shouldn’t cultivate at all, just drill, but there was just too much straw to get the seed in without hair pinning or running on top. We’ll see.

We have sown in dust before but been lucky with heavy rain following. Sometimes though it’s enough to chit but not sustain and we’ve lost them.
How lucky do you feel?

I’m just on clearing straw and will be DD’ing turnips in soon after. Hoping beyond hope that this ‘heatwave’ ends in spectacular thunderstorms and a couple of inches of rain…
If it flattens the Spring Barley then so be it, I’ll take that to get some green stuff growing again!

As above, it won’t grow in the bag.

If your concerned about it chitting and drying out if no rain comes , dry the top couple of inches right out then drill them an inch deep and roll. Seed should be ok like that for a few weeks to a month. I’ve done it with canola so it all is at the same stage for spraying. If you can get a fungicide on the seed too it helps with moulds from the ground.

Got 20 acres which has been in 6 weeks and it’s 3-4 cotyledon stage, hoping they don’t burn off, plough based system so soil should be loose enough for roots to go down
