Driver snobbery,or inability

No back issues here(y), admittedly half decent seat makes a difference. As for the world going soft , the "attitude" of some of the people I worked with in the UK nearly 30 years ago wouldn't be tolerated here even now.
i found the older tractor's that had the seat on the axles were better than the flat floored tractors that came later..
as for the phone ,if its ring's it will someone wanting to change my plans ,which means both job's will be rushed and i wont make as much money .
but when i am doing my weekly plan at night ,i find no one will answer there phone

If you are asking people to work 12 hour shifts on a regular basis then you are gonna get some sh!te in return.

4 x 12 shifts/week was historical, we wanted to change everyone to a 5 day week and they got the Union to block it!

As for personal mobile phones, apart from being a safety hazard (looking at the phone, not where you're going when walking across the yard) who the hell is so important that they need to be contactable 24/7? You don't see Boris or Teresa stopping half way through a speech or interview 'cos their mate's on the phone. "Kane to take the penalty to put Spurs ahead, oh hang on his phone's ringing."
At work OR on the phone, but not both.

Boris and Teresa have staff to take calls.
Calls come in ask , can you do a days work tomorrow? Miss that via what ever way it’s sent then if you don’t reply then there’s a days pay gone.

There are times you have to do the job with what ever is available and spitting the dummy like a 3 year old isn't an option, just because you don't get the newest or flashest tractor.
In my youth you were lucky enough to get the use of a company vehicle, if even it was an Avenger, Commer or even Imp.

Did you get a spare head gasket to take along with you in the Imp?

So Rowland, how would you have got work 20 years ago?

Road or field, taking a phone call while driving should be a sackable offence.
Things have changed in my work life and the way you get work. If you don’t reply ASAP then often it’s thought that you don’t want work and the next guy will get it.

There’s this marvellous thing called blue tooth which enables you to take calls via speakers and microphones meaning you can talk and drive at the same time.
Up the dale you can be out of reception most of the day. Often when you get back in a good area and revive texts answer phone messages etc. You then reply and often the answer is ok thanks but we sorted.

If it’s a sackable offence for taking a call in a field whilst working for you then I wouldn’t work for you. I’m fairly confident that I know when in a field it’s safe to take a call .

Having your phone with you at all times is a very basic H&S requirement these days especially if working alone. Being a grown up I'm capable of using/answering my phone when it is appropriate and as I said up thread I don't do facebook etc.
Phones these days do so many things, as a driver I may use it for google maps or just to play podcasts to listen too. There are also a number of apps that may be useful for your day to day work and having a phone may mean you can google something you don't know how to do.
What we are talking about here is really just a social media ban during work time which seems fine to me although I don't see the problem with reading TFF whilst stuck in a queue somewhere.

Who the hell is mad enough to give a collection of work phones to a gang of tractor drivers? The most readily breakable instrument known to man and you give it to people working in agriculture and industry involving mud/water/slurry and heavy machinery!!!

Good point, but they don't have to be delicate smart phones. Nokia still do a basic model for around €30, I had one which lasted around four years until the screen gave up the ghost.

Personally i do not see the need for a boss to give his lads all cheap phones, most people have there own so are able to be contacted via that. Some people run cb's so no real benefit from a 'work' phone.
That said if they are not capable of looking after a phone then im not sure id want them driving my tractors. .
