General description of the measure

This measure introduces legislative changes through Finance Bill 2021 and subsequent secondary legislation to restrict the entitlement to use red diesel and rebated biofuels from April 2022 to the following qualifying purposes:

  • for vehicles and machinery used in agriculture, horticulture, fish farming and forestry. This includes allowing vehicles used for agriculture to be used for cutting verges and hedges, snow clearance and gritting roads

I’ve seen people travel hundreds of miles in old beaver tail lorries to take part in ploughing matches. Assuming that the truck is running on DERV then the tiny cost of running an MF35 for 2 hours whilst trying to scratch a furrow would surely be insignificant?

Aye that's me, regularly go to Herefordshire from Carlisle, about 500 mile round trip on white, tractor uses about 12 litres over 2 days, lorry about 140 litres,

The way I see it is, red was allowed for the use to promote your business as a farmer / contractor, this is why it was allowed.
However there seems to be more and more of private individuals doing Ploughing, or people that are not directly involved with agricultural, most were brought up on a farm, or worked on on after leaving school, but in later years left the industry to seek other employment, yet fancy a vintage tractor to relive their youth.
And the only really working days there is for this group is Ploughing matches,
So this would be private use, and private use should be on white,
Not saying I agree with it, but that is nothing new, it's been like that for many years.

Red diesel is one thing, but many of the Ploughing men complaining about the use of tractor fuel, will be running over their gross weight on their vehicle that they move the Ploughing outfit about on aswell
