Drones in farming

Hi all,

Wondering how wide spread drone usage is in the UK...

Are you farmer? Do you use drones for:

1) Spraying fertiliser/pesticide?
2) Aerial Footage of farm?

If not why not?!??

Hey,

I am not UK farmer but once upon a time I have considered buying an agriculture drone with spraying/fertilizing purposes then I found the pivot fertilizing more effective than drones

Using drones to detect some kind of inefficiencies is a good idea but farmers would buy their own drones instead of waiting for someone each time to do it.

Yes I just bought a DJI mavic mini, mainly to promote my own business, but also to view fields from the air to help identify problems. Was thinking , it would be handy for herding too.

What sort?
I'm thinking of getting one to check water troughs daily- we have about 200 of them.
Phantom 4 pro plus - the one with its own screen, not cheap but robust in the wind and can fly a surprisingly long way over your own land.

Not sure how the pigs will react though, never tried it on mine. Cows don't bat an eyelid, sheep can be herded easily. You could take a picture or 6 at altitude and then look at them on the pc I suppose, best to get someone to come and try it out, the cameras are really good, some of the newer ones have zoom which may be better for your idea.

Thanks, that's useful.
I think that the sows would get used to it after the first time or two. I heard somewhere that they could fly a memorised route at repeated intervals.
Just had trackers fitted in the tractors and forklift, having lots of fun with those!

Mine will run memorised routes - if only I had read the instructions.....You will probably be right about the sows, they tend to ignore almost anything that is not food related if they see enough of it.

Drones in the UK have to take off and land with the same weight. Law was brought in because they were being used to drop phones and drugs into prisons. Hopefully it will be amended in the next few years.

Surely the criminals will just drop drugs into prison and then hoist a bag of flour the same weight out.

Or....take off weighing 250g, hitch up to a packet of drugs, drop off in prison, then land back again weighing the same 250g.
It would be like saying you can only start a tractor with no trailer attached.....start, attach, do work, drop off, stop.

Let’s face it, if your going to do something like dropping drugs are you realistically going to abide by any other laws? Line of sight, drone weight, registration etc etc!
Laws only affect the law abiding.
