Dual wheels or bigger tyres?

That would be my choice but he was worried about 650s making it too much higher and losing turning circle with the wider fronts to go with them. However we never thought of 650 /60 that @two-cylinder mentioned so could make 650s an option now

28.1x26s should match up to 520/70r38 and there should be second hand sets about. If you're buying new I'd go for 750/65r26 or 710/60r34 but get a tyre specialist to check ratios.

So burn diesel and wear metal trying to take out the compaction that you could've avoided? How well do the ripper legs take wheelings out when the power harrow is lifted?
No. On our land which is very abrasive it allows us to run the p harrow shallower as the tines behind the wheels don't wear faster. So uses less diesel increases forwards speed and makes less downtime changing p harrow blades. I run on 520/85 section tyres as they give better grip for ploughing and tramp less down when baling.

as for lifting the harrow up, well in my experience the difference between 520s and 600 tyres are negligible When you have the weight of a combi plus seed plus front press all lifted. If it really is a problem either plough the headlands after drilling the middle or run something over to loosen the headlands before drilling. I just stick the p harrow in a bit deeper which is what we did when using 600 tyres.

What works on your land doesn't work everywhere. I've never drilled with anything narrower than 800s. Look after your soil and it will look after you.

I won't disagree. The fitment of ripper legs have saved us far more than wider tyres ever would though, with a much smaller outlay. Ours is quite forgiving land but very hard on wearing parts if stuff isn't well set up.

How many of you let the tyres down , all this cutting of bands you say about ,whentyres let down they will rub , we have just been on with changing wheels for drilling ,and favouring 800,s with a 380/105/50 dual to get 4 m ,and tyre pres for middle of tractor and front duals ,the modern sft tyres we can go down to 9 psi , or run 4x 620/70/46 on rear ,800 gives us better flotation when run as single for subsoiling on ploughing and front tyre press rolling all the ground , as @Boohoo says trying fine tune and look after soil better

We used to run 30.5-32 for drill as low as 6psi but it is a very high ply tyre & it cracks the side walls in time, used to run 18.4-38 duals 9 on the tractor & 8 in the dual they did a good job , but the new VF tyres are way better 710-60-42 travels lighter that 18.4 duals or the 30.5 tyres by a mile

For new IF or VF tyres, I agree. Let too much air out of cheaper older tyres & you'll be buying new ones unexpectedly early. Continentals and Goodyears are supposed to be good but I've had delaminating on both of those by running them at the minimum book settings for the weight & speed listed in the book. Even Michelin XMs are prone to cracking up when run at low pressures.
