dump trailer

If you want to run out road gravel nicely then magic back doors are hopeless. Not much wrong with modern up and over back doors with long arms like the Kane flat floor dumper? Yes high pivot points heap up the soil better but far less stable tipping as whole body ends up higher.. deep v dumper bodies are better for looking down the side of the trailer when reversing. Really depends what job and what you prefer..

Apologies to the op for not rubbishing the trailer he was thinking of buying. It aint possible to make a trailer to suit every single task if it was there wouldn't be a need for threads like this. Ok the herbst design is narrow for scraping out (other buckets are available) but real clarty sh*t will stick in any trailer. If you don't want super singles spec something else. Magic doors are good no doubt but the trailer ends up 2ft longer for no benefit. Depends what the op wants it for and what access is like where it's gonna be used. I can get into places with my 14t herbst where a 14t nc won't cos of extra length. More than half a load and door opens first so I've never had half a load jammed against the door.
I wasn't rubbishing the the OP's choice of trailer only trying to make them aware of the other options and pluses and minuses of build types. At the end of the day its a tipping box on wheels. But the thing is a farm dumper is a thing that tends to be kept a long time so if it was me I would rather get peoples opinions negative or positive before buying.

Yes the Kane type back door which is similar to the European trailers joskin etc. is a good system as it has the pivots well forward to get the door well out of the road when tipping. The problem with some of the locally made trailers is there is too short a door movement on them.

The kane also features a valve on the door which keeps it from creepin open if shiftin sludgey stuf unlike the herron which doesnt shut dead tight and creeps open along the road if thers pressure on it from sloppy material. Another great herron design 🙈

I’m happy with my flat bottomed PF dump trailer. I have the ramps to go with it but never put a digger in it since I ended up buying a 13tonner. I specced a thicker floor, think standard is 8mm, I went for 10mm. (Or If standard 10, I went for 12, I can’t remember right now). I have super singles but with lower profile wider tires, I’ll check the size when I get home in a couple of days. The ride hieght is slightly lower, better for loading. I’ll agree it doesn’t tip as high a pile as my last trailer. It’s got an up and over door but you can also lift off the door to load a digger so gives you the option of you are worried about stuff sticking under the door.

Why such low sides? No good for road work surely?

I take it you guys that buy dump trailers, just use a trailer for soil/stone/gravel and have no need for a grain/silage/roots tipper?

As you say, I’ve only ever used it for stone and soil. When I bought it, I had thoughts of increasing the height of the sides by 6 inches but haven’t really needed to. I can manage to get 14 tonnes in it if I take care loading it. Depending on the patience of the guy on the loading shovel at the local quarry (and the type of gravel) he can put anything from 9 to 14t in it. If I buy a load of type 1 sub base after a week of rain it will easily be 14t, some of which is water!😢

Any dump trailer with an up and over back door is a waste of time , it rules it out of a lot of jobs , I’ve a red rock which gets used for everything from drawing rocks to often carrying a few bales of silage , it carries tree stumps , timber , bushes , clay, stone , beet , pit silage . It has a high hinge point and is great for tipping high tight loads together. I wouldn’t let a dump trailer around the place with an up and over back door.

I think you are thinking of the old designs.. we are running the new Stewart design with a massive long arm on the tailboard. Nothing jammed against it yet..

Whatever you get make sure the door drops down the up and over ones are useless if you put branches ect in it
Having moved a lot of branches stumps etc with an up and over door there's a lot to be said for how you load it. At worst it's not a big job to take door off for a day (only done it 5/6 times in last 10 year probably).

Have you drawn tree stumps in it yet.
I’m sure that will be no bother. The tail door is designed for the toughest jobs. It is absolutely massive. It is away in the sky when fully up and combined with the flat floor leaves a huge gap for roots and branches to get out. The only thing that could hook in there might be fence wire when gathering old fences. But we have to have the tailgate for accurately spreading Of Gravel and stone.

I bought a 14t PF dump trailer about 4 years or so ago. Its had no issues and been very useful to me, though I won't pretend I've worked it to death, just shifting soil and hardcore around the farm. Can't really comment on performance vs other makes as it replaced a series of ancient farm built trailers, so anything modern would seem like a Rolls Royce upgrade by comparison. I'm still pleased not to have to get out to unlatch the tailgate every time!:D
Hi. I’m thinking of buying a pf dump trailer here. What is the paint work like on them, i do know some trailer companies used dirt cheap paint

I have one about 3 or 4 years old now. Solid trailer with plenty of steel but paint is poor to be fair. Mine ha spent most of its life under cover albeit sometimes a Dutch barn but is looking scabby now. The paint looked thick enough but I think surface prep was a bit lacking. Still a good strong heavy trailer though.

No idea about the type of paint. Mine is something close to Ford blue but I asked for that colour. Not sure what the standard colour is. From memory I think the floor was 8mm and sides 6mm but I speced a thicker floor. Either 10 or 12 mm. Mines a flat bottomed one with ramps stored underneath for loading a digger in to it.
