Dusty machinery on the roads

Saw a lad loose control of a motorbike because of a combine turning on the headland next the road.
The dust just closed the road, no visibility .............
I guess everyone was a bit at fault, but the outcome was bad for the biker.
Something we never even thought off, especially as the combine never even left the field.

The biker should have seen the combine and dust and slowed down

Straw lorries should really be netted or sheeted end of. How to do it safely is the big thing to keep the staff safe and HSE happy.

Don't see why. Its not as if it was hazardous material. Its just straw.
If you insist on sheeting straw trucks, then I insist that every damn tree that sheds leaves in the country should be cut down to prevent it. They make the roads slippery in Autumn and present a massive safety hazard in windy conditions. Millions of tons of leaves have to be swept or gathered off roads, railways, drives and drains annually. They are in a different and far more hazardous, costly and nuisance category than the occasional straw truck with a few wisps trailing it.

A haulier we used years ago used to sheet ,but stopped due to HSE telling him it was an unnecesary risk standing on top of a load holding a sheet.
and thats the nub of this one if we are required to sheet in the fields there will need to be a sheeting gantry and sheltered spot to safely sheet down not how I do it now lift up. on bale and roll out sheet back on bale and down

Well I can say is that if it is one of your family was hurt or even worse in a rta that was caused by a driver being distracted by straw getting blown off a lorry you would all probably change your minds agriculture has to clean up its act a lot , netting a load would go along way in pr and safety.
Some of the tight spots on roads around here can easily have a 2 ft wide thick line of straw where the straw lorries brush against the hedges and trees and can be a potential fire risk to properties close to the road .

Straw or anything blowing of a load is still classed as littering the highway and to be technical you can get prosecuted your choice if you want to spend a day in court carry on . The point I'm trying to make is that if we try to clean up our act then the authorities won't try so hard to find ways to force people to do things differently .

Not really, you could do it that way of course but the easiest way to reduce the risk is to load it into curtainsiders.
Straw going on the ferry here between North and South islands has to be completely sheeted not just the top. Used to load a lot going interisland and the transport company mostly sent curtains.

tree owners should be made to trim them back from the road, and not leave the lorry mirrors to do it

Plod were obviously having an easy afternoon!!

Did they book you? As I would imagine the fiscal would be pissing themselves laughing, unless you were actually blinding following drivers with clouds of dust.
Plod are tractor haters in his part of the country, I got stopped twice in one day down there once with a unimog.

It never used to be a problem, the issue is Trucks have got far far bigger, higher, longer and wider for roads which were simply not designed for them - unless they are on a motorway, dual carriageway or major A road.

I’m sure that incident was featured on a road wars type police program.
