cull cows

We imported 8 Holsteins in summer 2009 as late in-calf heifers, they were very well grown heifers calved at 2 yrs.. We lost one soon after calving to toxic mastitis (at a time when the cows were playing second fiddle to visiting a seriously ill fr in law) but the last one left the farm in summer 2016 and we had 4 others still in 2015, their overall performance was about the same as the rest of our herd. Health wise you will not be buying TB and they are also certified free of some other diseases - lepto I think, your importer will advise. Make sure you test for neospora if they are at a suitable stage of pregnancy. Being otherwise closed, and of reasonably high health status, we tested for Johnes, neospora (2 were rejected), BVD antigen and IBR. One did have Johnes after 3 yrs, but the others never showed any signs and we do test regularly. Talk to your vet - we were warned to watch for worms as they were probably fully housed before they arrived here so no immunity.

We sell our culls deadweight and have not noticed any difference in price despite the fact that as imports they cannot be farm assured. They were nice quiet cows that served us well.
Where do you sell your cull if you don't mind me asking?

Wasn't that long ago that they used to have an annual on farm surplus heifer sale! Was a top herd at one time if you liked pure Holstein.

wouldn't bother buying em over here were too chuffin daft to make em cheaper than importing them. mate of mine went to a big sale down south couple of years ago, some big estate packin up, big fancy setup all fresh foreign young cattle thought he'd buy a wagon load of cheap milk, all he ended up with was a brew and a bacon buttie! only one thing ever goes cheap in this world and that's baby chicks.

I don't think they will be cheap some farmers are probably not bothered about the cull value and will think of the milk in the tank. Some are in calf to sexed semen so I guess that will help there value as well.

Had 50 in 2010. They have done us really well, a good number still here, even after a change in system.

At the time we were a closed herd. We vaccinated for bvd before they came, and ibr just after. Think we might have had one with johnes. However moving from away being a closed herd is the best thing we have done.
Why is moving from a closed herd a good thing?

Nose around, window shopping, tea AND a bacon buttie - I would say that was a successful venture! (y)
