Dysect on young lambs

How early would you put dysect on a lamb, is it a bit strong for lambs a couple of days old? Better to use spot-on instead?

Wanting to treat them as they go out of the lambing park, usually ticks on them by marking and I think the stress of marking makes them susceptible to whatever nasties the ticks are carrying as always get some going down with joint-ill after marking, often the best of them

I've had enough of dysect for one lifetime, we put spot-on on lambs at marking - under 3 days old, done it a couple of years now and it seems to have sorted our joint ill problems.

I asked about spraying young lambs for tick cover maybe 10yr ago with my supplier - they put me in touch with Zoetis' Veterinary Officer. Sothis advice came from the top.

He said lambs are fine to spray with 25ml Dysect at 10 days old and it'll give the full 12 week cover.

I've been working to that advice ever since (although there is usually 1 or 2 lambs are only a week old when sprayed) with no issues. Lambs get sprayed mid/late April when they go back to the hill, and then again at shearing (next gather).

Since a storm of tick borne fever a few years ago, we put Spoton on every lamb at marking - tags, tails, Spoton, Stockholm tar and ring the balls at 2-3 days old, or younger.
Aye they normally get spot on or dysect at marking, the trouble is the lambing to marking period.

Is that with a spray tip on the gun rather than a dribble bar?

Lambing to marking is only a few hours for us, if we can manage it. When things get off plan, I'll give them Spoton and tar in the field and then tag and tail as soon as I can afterwards. The tar is obvious and means they don't get done twice.
Seemed strange for me at first to be marking lambs at hours old rather than, how shall I say... traditional timescales, but really what else is there to do at lambing time? it's great to finish lambing and know the whole job is done.

Just started using Spotinor for ticks in young lambs.

Recommended by Barkers Animal Health, as it works out considerably cheaper than the alternatives.

2.5ml per lamb, costing roughly 12.5p per lamb

Ticks are really bad here this time. Think we’re going to have to treat every sheep/ cow on the farm. Got ticks on one end of the farm that never had them before, hoggs were lifting with them yesterday when I had them in.

Dysect obviously kills ticks, but does it also dissuade ticks from attaching in the first place, or do they attach as normal then die? I’m minded to do the ewes as well and try not to give the little beggars a chance.

It's more the dysect killing you I'm worried about. It's overkill IMO.

I do lambs with dyesect, as soon as they are dry and then drift out to the hill, have done so for many years without any problems. my ground is rotten with ticks, I will do over 600 lambs, by the time I am fished. Now with outdout the down side is just how much of the stuff I get covered in, it's really starting to worry me!!

Just how bad is dyesect, crovect and spot on for you?

crovect and dysect makes me a right bad fettle and thats just the smell of it, not getting anything on me. Never had any bother with spot on and I’ve many times been covered in the stuff when the pipe comes off the bottle.

The ones I put it on have no bite marks at all.we also do the ewes.don't put it on when its really hot.do it first thing or later in the day when its cooled.
