Or change the stem for a suspended one, made a big difference here

My brother was asking me about bikes the other day. He hasn’t got one at the moment, his idea is that a £5k 24kg E mountain bike will get him fitter. I suggested that £1k on a ordinary bike might be a better bet.

TBH my brothers favourite bike is a 300 KTM, he races enduros so it’s good for 70mph over any terrain

I have a bike similiar to teh KTM, but unlike your Bro, I have decided these days, my best speed is about 50mph slower...

They are great fun for MTB if you are into going downhill fast but see the uphills as a chore. For pootling around on the road holding up traffic or long steady days covering large distances off road I don't see the point, at the moment I'm win/win, eat less, save money, lose weight, go faster, no need to buy ebike, I can see that it would be attractive in 10 or so years though.

Wind Hill https://www.b1ke.com/b1keparks/windhill/ is not far from me if you want to do downhill the car park is always busy. I’ve done it once and definitely feel safer on the road

I'm the same as you - unless you are over 70 then best to invest in a nice light bike and just pedal. And one area of benefit is mountain bike uphills which are usually boring

Does depend where you live, around here there are some seriously steep hills and when you get ahem to a certain age an e bike is a godsend, but when I visit family I’m Buckinghamshire I wouldn’t dream of taking an e bike down there.
