5 months after storm babet we're still flooded 90 acres of summer grazing 4ft deep I am currently pumping, 1k a month just in electric, most land in the Idle Valley is either flooded or waterlogged. The Idle is pumped into the Trent at 36cumec unfortunately flow diwn the river is 11cunec. Tonight I meet home owners up stream who have being flooded several times. All because the river has not being maintained. MPS IDBs and even defra don't seem to gave any influence over the EA who are wrecking the countryside at a national level.

It's another post office scandal in the making really.
The government have got to make these organisations answerable for their inactivity in maintenance and pissing their budget away on studies to show they're doing well......

All these waterways, especially the bigger ones are man maintained, if they're not they'll simply change their course, and the best result would be a senior MP getting wet because of it
Nothing will change otherwise

This is a disaster waiting to happen. Locally the IDB do their utmost to maintain the watercourses. Unfortunately for these to work properly the main rivers have to be kept clean in good time in the Autumn.
The EA staff seem to only work intermittently and the waste from the machines not being used to do maintenance is extraordinary.
Local EA hired in a long reach machine which apparently was costing £4k per week, but had no one to drive it. So it sat in the yard for 4 months before being taken away.

Trying to do infrastructure work in the winter is crazy as they often end up having to put in large pumps to rescue situations of serious flooding. No one seems to plan any work and apparently they do much of it under emergency powers as this doesn't come out of their budget.

I do think they are as bad as the post office peoples lives are being ruined due to their failure to maintain watercourses and you just can't get to the ones that decide policy. One EA catchment adviser said last week that it was more do with heavy rain and added infrastructure don't they understand that's their job to manage water.

Getting to the point now where its a case of fck the EA and just crack on with what needs doing using a commonsense approach. They seem more concerned with a few beavers and whos got a fishing licence than drainage. They arent fit for purpose anymore

The problem starts with the EA board, after all they're the ones that are responsible for the strategic direction of the EA as a whole. Needless to say the board is absolutely stuffed full of individuals with vested interests that run contrary to those of the poor sods being flooded out.
Think we need a itv documentary series

MLC took dredged hundreds of tons of silt out of Salters Lode lock but the river the other side is EA and is currently completely silted up so no boats can use the lock

I think the biggest trouble is all the big bosses of big companies/ organisations are all hand in hand with the government
all on big salaries and don’t give a feck about the little people as quoted by the guy in the post office scandal
they take as much personally as they can while in their jobs including the government
none of them take pride in their jobs and get big bonuses for not doing their job

At a guess: MPs - Members of parliament. IDBs - Internal Drainage Boards.

I wonder if the EA are still ticking their boxes for the EU's wetlands directive. Just add water? Which was the root of the problems on the Somerset levels a few years ago.. :scratchhead:
How much dredging was done in the Levels?
Has it sorted the problem?
If so it would be a useful case study to put in front of EA, MPs etc.

I think you need to ask John Price about the outcome of doing that!
